Inquilinar knew his old friend Reiner well enough to understand that the serious demeanor meant there was something of great importance at hand. Their deep friendship, forged through years of exploring the mysteries of magic and traveling across the continent together, led Inquilinar to decide without hesitation that he would help his friend.
He had originally planned to take his newly recruited apprentice, Beric, to the coast to experience the relentless flow of rivers merging into the sea, allowing Beric to grasp the essence of his specialty, Blazing Magic. However, now that he thought about it, the ocean could wait; his friend was in trouble and needed immediate assistance.
Reiner's expression softened slightly as he reassured Inquilinar, "There's no need to worry so much. I hope you can help me by inviting all the mages to the Xanliu Association location."
Inquilinar felt a bit dazed; it seemed like Reiner was speaking a different language. To illustrate, it was like when a serious friend approached you during a ten-minute break in class, asking for help with something trivial. It left anyone confused—after all, class would resume soon enough, and other students would come naturally.
Inquilinar was equally perplexed. The Xanliu Association was a grand event among mages held once every three years. Surely, many mages would attend without needing an invitation? It wasn't like seventy years ago when they had to spread the word themselves after parting ways.
Despite his outwardly fiery personality, Inquilinar quickly pieced it together: Was there something important happening? Were they planning to hold the Xanliu Association earlier than usual? This was unprecedented; for seventy years, the event had always been held on schedule without any talk of rescheduling.
When Reiner mentioned it, his face lit up with hope—it was about the Gate of Truth, which contained profound truths about all magical mysteries. Beric, who had been quietly listening, couldn’t help but exclaim, "The Gate of Truth? That sounds impressive!"
Unlike Beric, who had just begun to explore the magical world, Inquilinar understood far too much and felt skeptical. The Gate of Truth? If anyone else had mentioned it—especially another friend skilled in Dark Magic—Inquilinar would have dismissed it as nonsense without a second thought. Yet here it was, coming from the honest and reliable Reiner, who seemed utterly serious about even convening the Xanliu Association early.
Inquilinar was astonished. Could there really be such a wondrous and mysterious door in the world?
Reiner understood that anyone who first heard of the Gate of Truth would likely express some skepticism. Even he, at first, had been like a frog in a well, completely disbelieving when he first encountered it.
During this outing, Xu Lie had given him several alchemical tools of the same kind, enough for him to gain the trust of others. Reiner pulled out two items: one was a small wooden board resembling a mini Go board, about the size of his hand; the other was a bronze medal.
"Inquilinar, take a look at this first," Reiner said as he presented the small board in his left hand. "This is called the Mage's Seeking Board. It can automatically explore within a hundred miles, identifying all humanoid figures that possess magical power. Once it locates them, it locks onto their position and marks it on the board. The center represents my current location, and each actual mile corresponds to one square on the board. I used this to find you all."
