In the depths of night in the Great Federation's Sherwood District, Anthony followed Xu Lie's advice and arrived here, preparing to collaborate with his colleague, Charles. Indeed, Cobra Boss Charles had also been summoned by the Military-Industrial Complex.
The pinnacle of both the underworld and the legitimate world in the metropolis was about to reunite once again in this Great Federation district. The Military-Industrial Complex was well aware that the Great Federation would not easily let them slip away, and they had urgently recalled personnel from various locations.
William and Mers drove a large truck, obediently trailing behind Anthony's vehicle as their means of infiltration. They disguised themselves as merchants seeking profit, transporting food supplies.
In the stillness of the night, the sound of the truck's engine echoed far and wide, and the perimeter lights of the city began to flash. A few mercenaries stepped forward, waving for them to stop for inspection.
Anthony was quite well-known in the metropolis, but his reputation was limited to that area. Once in a different region, he hardly needed to worry about being recognized. Thus, he confidently stepped out of the vehicle for inspection.
With a familiar smile, he offered cigarettes to the mercenaries. "Gentlemen, we're just here to earn some money transporting food. I assure you there are no dangerous goods on board."
William and Mers exchanged glances as they got out of the truck, both surprised. If they hadn't witnessed it themselves, they would have found it hard to believe that Anthony, a high-ranking and serious director, could lower himself to engage in such casual banter.
Given Anthony's friendly demeanor, the mercenaries didn't raise any objections. They allowed him to open the truck's rear compartment and told them to wait aside.
This was William's first experience with such covert operations, and he felt a bit anxious. "Director Anthony," he began hesitantly before remembering Anthony's instructions; once they were here, he should simply refer to him as "Sir." After all, during their time in the metropolis, they had represented justice and were guardians of order.
When executing missions, there was no need for such sneaky actions; they had always operated with their police lights flashing boldly. Now suddenly transformed into rats scurrying through the sewers, it would be a stretch for William to say he could adapt instantly without some inner turmoil.
Meanwhile, Anthony remained calm. Noticing that the mercenaries were only conducting a casual inspection—without anyone approaching or guarding against them—he quietly began to explain further.
To soothe the emotions of his two capable subordinates, he reassured them, "Don't worry."
Although the Sherwood District announced its separation from the Great Federation, was it really that easy to break away? This region relied heavily on heavy industry, with very few agricultural products. Without external food supplies, the people here would struggle to survive. Therefore, they would certainly welcome any smugglers bringing in food; that was their only hope for stability.
He kept the details of the covert mission to himself. Even if someone in the Mercenaries had sharp ears and overheard something, they wouldn't suspect anything.
Soon, two individuals with metal detectors came down and reported that everything was fine; at least no metal had been detected. Only then did the Mercenaries lower their guard and allow Anthony and his companions to pass.
William let out a sigh of relief, feeling deep admiration for the director. As expected of someone in that position, he managed to handle such a covert operation behind enemy lines so well. It seemed that Anthony must have been an exceptionally outstanding Search Team Member back in the day when there was no successor to the director.
He realized he still had much to learn from him.
The truck drove into the city, and after some hassle, they found a buyer who purchased the truckload of food at a price slightly above market value. Unfortunately, Anthony and his companions had too little to transport and lacked bargaining power.
