The External Intelligence Agency was headquartered in an unremarkable five-story building. To say it was hidden in plain sight would be an understatement; surrounded by towering skyscrapers, this small, squat structure stood out awkwardly in the heart of the Great Federation's capital, where every inch of land was precious.
William and Mers carefully held onto the frame containing Xu Lie's portrait as they followed Anthony to the entrance of the building. "Is this really the External Intelligence Bureau?" they wondered. The reality was far from their expectations of a hub bustling with human elites and resources pouring in.
Anthony cast a bemused glance at the small building, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Not quite what you imagined, huh?"
Though it was touted as an organization for humanity's urgent response to Alien Life, the truth was that those inside were merely the execution layer. The real decision-makers were nowhere to be found here. At most, they would join a network meeting of the External Intelligence Agency when necessary to issue commands.
As an Imitation Human, Anthony was loyal only to Xu Lie and had no particular stake in the Great Federation's affairs. However, for the sake of Xu Lie's plans, he still put on a show of displeasure at being absorbed into the External Intelligence Bureau.
William was taken aback by this revelation. "Then why did we come all this way to deliver the frame?"
They had been fully armed and cautious since early morning, making their way from the metropolis capital. Anyone who approached within five steps of them would raise their alertness. After a tiring day of running around, was it all just to hand over a frame to the execution layer?
"Fack," he muttered under his breath. "We might as well have kept it ourselves!"
Mers shared his frustration, lamenting how the Senior Management seemed to thrive on making things unnecessarily complicated. He felt like escaping from this small building of the External Intelligence Agency.
As Anthony led them inside, he continued to complain, "If I knew what they were thinking, I wouldn't have to keep running back and forth."
William realized that even Director Anthony was just following orders from higher-ups. Ever since the Investigation Bureau had been merged into the External Intelligence Bureau, their organization had been rebranded as the Outer Metropolis Branch. Their office location and salaries remained unchanged; only the signatures on all documents had to be updated.
This time, they had delivered the frame at the request of their superiors, traveling a long distance for it. Just a few steps into the lobby, they were stopped by personnel who informed them that security checks were necessary to prevent Alien Life from disguising themselves as humans infiltrating the External Intelligence Bureau.
The company’s technology was reliable; thanks to the Black Technology Crystal embedded in Anthony’s mind, he could effectively mimic human electrical signals and passed through Zheng Hu Shao’s three security checks without issue.
With a swagger, William entered the External Intelligence Bureau accompanied by his two subordinates. Soon, relevant members greeted the trio and took away the framed message from Xu Lie.
In that moment of parting, William felt a pang of reluctance; it was the last relic of a hero, a treasure that could ignite the justice and light within him. However, he thought about the multitude of scientists invited by the External Intelligence Bureau, who might find a way to defeat the Alien Life from Xu Lie's message.
Suppressing his emotions, he chose to let go. His expression resembled that of an ardent fan reluctantly handing over the last signed item from their idol for the sake of saving the world. The onlookers found it quite amusing.
"Seriously, William, what kind of expression is that? Is it really necessary to be this reluctant? Why not just take a photo with your phone?"
"Oh my God, I can understand William. This sacrifice for humanity's future, having to part with such a precious item, is truly magnificent!"
"??? How abstract! Is my worldview so different from others that this is considered greatness?"
This time, the camera did not continue to follow William but instead tracked the Intelligence Agency member who took the frame, leading to the top-level conference room. The entire fifth floor had only four stairwells leading to an enormous conference room in the center, where the internal walls had been torn down.
As it turned out, such a large space was not necessary.
