Most of the vehicles that came into view had long since lost their side mirrors, crowded together in a chaotic mass. Accompanying the traffic jam were heads poking out of windows and the coarse shouts drowned out by a cacophony of honking horns. 0

On both sides of the street, pedestrians hurried past, faces filled with panic, their hands burdened with bags of all sizes. Despite the clear blue sky and abundant sunlight, William felt as if he were surrounded by a thick shroud of darkness. 0

He couldn't afford to think too much; he kept urging himself to move, to act. He focused on his mission, using it to numb his brain and freeze any extraneous thoughts. If he didn’t do this, he felt he might succumb to the chaos around him, becoming just another member of the panicked crowd caught up in the fear of the Alien UFO. 0

He ran, legs pumping without regard for fatigue, his mind blank as he finally reached East District Cross Street. There was no need for deeper investigation; just seeing the thick plumes of black smoke rising was enough to gauge the extent of the destruction caused by the riot. At least a dozen shops had been vandalized, looted, and set ablaze. 0

The air was thick with the acrid smell of burning, mingled with curses from scattered onlookers and the shouts of crazed individuals firing guns into the air. It was as if they had painted a postmodern hellscape. 0

What chilled William to the bone was that at the head of Cross Street, there were only two other individuals, both looking pale and shaken. 0

His voice came out hoarse: "Where's the team? Where's the captain?" 0

One replied with a grim expression: "I arrived two hours ago and called in; no one answered." 0

The other had already taken several steps back, clearly intending to leave Cross Street: "I tried contacting other team members too; no one responded." 0

It was evident that Captain Pristow and the others were missing. They hadn’t encountered any danger nor could they have simply been taken down by the Mob. Anyone who could enter the Investigation Bureau was surely a trained elite; equipped with bulletproof vests and exercising caution, how could they be easily overwhelmed by ordinary rioters? 0

The fact that he hadn’t seen Pristow or anyone else suggested only one possibility: they had fled. To describe it in terms from Xu Lie's past life, it was a classic case of deserting in battle. 0

William swayed slightly as if he were a precarious building about to collapse. Yes, it dawned on him—perhaps he was still righteous, but who knew about others in the Investigation Bureau? 0

Last night on the Transport Ship, after the arrival of the Serpent Support, Captain Pristow not only retreated secretly but also demanded obedience to his orders. Upon learning of the existence of the Alien UFO, it was indeed unlikely that someone as seasoned as Captain Pristow would continue to linger in the metropolis. Perhaps after returning home last night, he had already hurriedly taken his family out of the city? That phone call this morning about the mission was merely a tactic to buy time. 0

How ridiculous. Is justice just a joke? 0

William couldn't help but laugh out loud as he stepped onto Cross Street with his gun in hand, determined to at least attempt to block the Mob and maintain some semblance of order. He would not flee. 0

This scene left not only William but also the onlookers dumbfounded. 0

【Is it me who has a problem? Or is it the captain of the Investigation Bureau who has a problem? This is a complete retreat!】 0
【Hey, friend, this is quite normal. The Investigation Bureau clearly doesn't provide enough resources; with such little funding for a month, who would risk their life against aliens?】 0
【It takes a protagonist like William with such a sense of justice; I wonder if he can uphold order on Cross Street.】 0
【This is absurd! Not only did the captain run away, but even the other members of the search team have fled.】 0

The two remaining individuals at the scene wanted to persuade William but were at a loss for words. After hesitating for a moment, one of them gritted his teeth and turned to leave. The last one struggled for a long time before finally deciding to follow William. 0
