The cold wind howled across the Northern Grasslands. Lin Xiu Wen rode alongside Ashide, a group of elite cavalry trailing behind them. These were Ashide's personal guards, each one a master of their craft.
"Lin," Ashide suddenly spoke, "do you know why I insisted on bringing you to the Northern Border?"
Lin Xiu Wen shook his head. "Please enlighten me, Khan."
Ashide reined in his horse and pointed toward a distant snow-capped mountain. "At the summit of that mountain lies an ancient altar. Before my Father Khan passed away, he told me that a secret regarding the Central Plains Royal Family is hidden there."
Lin Xiu Wen's heart stirred. "Is it related to the Heirloom Jade Seal?"
"Perhaps," Ashide said meaningfully, "but I have always felt that this secret is connected to you."
The two continued onward and soon arrived at the foot of the snow mountain. Ashide ordered his guards to wait below, taking only Lin Xiu Wen with him up the mountain.
The path was rugged and the snow deep. Although Lin Xiu Wen's martial skills were not as strong as his brother's, he had trained under Liu Rumei for many years and managed to keep pace with Ashide.
"We're here." Ashide pointed to a stone door covered in ice and snow. "This is the entrance to the altar."
Together they pushed open the stone door, and a wave of cold air rushed out. Inside the altar was a hidden world, with walls adorned with ancient murals.
Lin Xiu Wen examined them closely and realized that these murals depicted a story about royal bloodlines.
"This is..." He stared in shock at the last mural, "the Former Emperor and the Northern Princess..."
Ashide nodded. "Indeed. The Former Emperor once traveled incognito to the Northern Border and fell in love with my aunt. But for various reasons, their union could not come to fruition."
She pointed at an infant depicted in the mural. "This child is their offspring."
Lin Xiu Wen felt a storm of emotions rise within him. "Could it be...?"
"Yes," Ashide met Lin Xiu Wen's gaze directly. "You are that child. Your mother is my aunt."
Lin Xiu Wen staggered back. "This... this can't be possible..."
"That is why His Majesty said you would find unexpected gains in the Northern Border," Ashide sighed. "He has known your true identity all along."
Lin Xiu Wen forced himself to calm down. "Then what about the Heirloom Jade Seal...?"
"It is here." Ashide walked to the center of the altar and turned a mechanism.
The ground slowly opened up, revealing a Jade Box beneath it. Inside lay the long-lost Heirloom Jade Seal.
Lin Xiu Wen carefully took out the seal, only to find a letter pressed beneath it.
The letter was penned by the Former Emperor, recounting everything from that time: how he fell in love with the Northern Princess, how they were forced apart, and how he concealed the jade seal and the truth here before his death.
"The Former Emperor hoped," Ashide said softly, "that one day, his bloodline would inherit the throne."
Lin Xiu Wen tightened his grip on the jade seal, a whirlwind of emotions flooding his heart. He had never imagined that he bore such a heavy responsibility.
Just then, a commotion erupted outside the altar.
"This is bad!" Ashide's expression changed. "Someone is following us!"
The two rushed out of the altar to find Ashide's guards engaged in a fierce battle with a group of men in black. Leading them was none other than the supposedly "dead" Eunuch Zhao!
"Didn’t expect this, did you?" Eunuch Zhao sneered. "I’m still alive!"
Lin Xiu Wen suddenly realized, "So you faked your death just to track us down and find the jade seal!"
"Exactly!" Eunuch Zhao laughed maniacally. "Once I obtain the jade seal, I can..."
Before he could finish, an arrow whistled through the air and struck Eunuch Zhao in the throat.
"Xiu Wen!" came Lin Xiu Wu's voice from a distance.
It turned out that Lin Xiu Wu and Liu Rumei had sensed something amiss and had been secretly following to protect them.
In the ensuing chaos, all the men in black were defeated. Lin Xiu Wen and his companions took the jade seal and returned to Central Plains overnight.
In the Golden Luan Hall, the Emperor gazed at the recovered Heirloom Jade Seal, tears streaming down his face.
"Xiu Wen," the Emperor said, grasping Lin Xiu Wen's hand, "now is the time to tell you another secret."
Lin Xiu Wen's heart stirred. "Your Majesty..."
"Actually," the Emperor began slowly, "I am not the biological child of the Former Emperor. The Former Emperor had no sons and adopted me. He has been searching for his true bloodline until..."
Lin Xiu Wen was utterly shocked. "So that's why Your Majesty..."
"Exactly," the Emperor nodded. "I have been waiting for you. Now, it is time to return power to you."
