After pressing the red button, the black vortex at the bottom of the device did not expand as expected. Instead, it flickered momentarily, crackling like an old television with a poor connection.
"What’s going on?" Nan Gong Xuan was taken aback. She slapped the control panel a few times, as if scolding a disobedient washing machine. "This piece of junk is failing me at a critical moment? I should have just hit it with a hammer!"
Lin Yuan lay on the ground, feeling a sharp pain in his chest, as if he had been run over by a truck. He struggled to lift his head and saw Nan Gong Xuan flailing about in a panic, unable to hold back a laugh. "Haha, looks like your time portal isn't ready yet and is already short-circuiting. Just a friendly tip—next time, hire a professional electrician instead of messing around yourself."
Nan Gong Xuan shot Lin Yuan a fierce glare, a glint of murderous intent flashing in her eyes. She raised her dagger, preparing to deliver the final blow. "Less talk! Die!"
At that moment, the laboratory door was suddenly smashed open, splintering wood flying everywhere. A figure darted in like a bolt of lightning, creating a gust of wind that sent Nan Gong Xuan's hair flying.
The newcomer was tall and clad in a tight black suit, wearing a black mask that obscured all but his cold eyes. He radiated an overwhelming Spiritual Energy Fluctuation, like a volcano on the verge of eruption, filling the air with an oppressive atmosphere.
"Who are you?" Nan Gong Xuan asked warily, sensing that this person was no ordinary foe. She tightened her grip on the dagger.
"Qi Gong Association, Shadow," the figure replied coldly, his voice deep and hoarse, reminiscent of a demonic whisper from hell that sent chills down one's spine.
"Shadow?" Nan Gong Xuan frowned. She had heard of this codename; he was one of the top experts from the Qi Gong Association, with unfathomable strength. "What are you doing here?"
"Someone wants your life." Shadow's gaze fell on Lin Yuan, his eyes glinting with coldness like a predator eyeing its prey. "And someone wants his life too," he added, his tone devoid of warmth.
Lin Yuan felt as if he were being targeted by death itself; every hair on his body stood on end. "W-What do you want from me? I haven't done anything to anyone!" he stammered through gritted teeth, cursing inwardly—how could he be caught in this mess while lying down?
"Taking money to eliminate threats," Shadow said coldly. In an instant, he vanished from sight and reappeared right in front of Lin Yuan, brandishing a Black Dagger aimed straight at Lin Yuan's heart with blinding speed.
"Oh no!" Lin Yuan's heart raced as fear gripped him. In this life-and-death moment, adrenaline surged through him as he activated the Time Manipulator. A visible wave of energy rippled outward from him as time seemed to freeze; Shadow's dagger halted less than an centimeter from Lin Yuan's heart, its tip even brushing against his clothing and sending chills through him.
"Mm?" Shadow seemed a bit surprised; he hadn't expected Lin Yuan to have such a trick up his sleeve, and a flicker of astonishment crossed his eyes.
Seizing the opportunity, Lin Yuan performed a lazy roll, awkwardly tumbling to the side and narrowly dodging Shadow's attack. He inwardly sighed in relief at his luck.
"Interesting," Shadow smirked coldly, launching another attack with even greater speed. Each strike was lethal, and the dagger sliced through the air with a sharp whistle.
Although Lin Yuan activated the Time Manipulator, the effect of pausing time lasted only a few seconds. He had to find a way to escape before time resumed its flow. This was no joke; this guy really wanted to kill me!
As he dodged Shadow's attacks, he scanned his surroundings, hoping to find a glimmer of hope. The laboratory was a chaotic mess; he had no idea what Nan Gong Xuan usually researched in this strange place.
Suddenly, he spotted a pile of clutter in the corner of the lab. An idea struck him. He activated the Material Decomposition function, breaking down the junk into a cloud of black powder. Then he hurled the powder at Shadow like a ninja throwing shurikens.
"Child's play!" Shadow scoffed disdainfully, swinging his dagger as black Lingqi swirled around him, blocking all the powder without a single speck touching him.
However, at that moment, Lin Yuan activated the Time Reversal Function. Time rewound a few seconds, returning Shadow to his previous position while Lin Yuan appeared behind him like a ghost. This maneuver left Shadow momentarily stunned.
"What?" Shadow exclaimed in shock; he hadn't expected Lin Yuan to manipulate time, which exceeded his understanding of Qigong.
Seizing the chance, Lin Yuan delivered a powerful punch infused with potent Lingqi directly into Shadow's back. Shadow's body flew like a cannonball, crashing against the laboratory wall with a thunderous bang, leaving an impression shaped like a person.
"Cough cough..." Shadow struggled to rise from the ground, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. His eyes were filled with rage and disbelief; this kid was something else!
"You... you can actually control time?" he asked incredulously, his voice trembling slightly.
"That's right," Lin Yuan replied coldly, striking what he thought was a cool pose. "Now it's my turn."
He activated the Time Manipulator once more, and time froze again. He stepped toward Shadow, his eyes filled with murderous intent, as if the Grim Reaper had descended.
Su Jiu'er’s voice suddenly echoed in Lin Yuan's earpiece: "Lin Yuan, Shadow's weakness is his Energy Core, located right in the center of his chest. You must strike there precisely to defeat him completely. His Energy Core is unstable and easily disrupted by high-frequency Spiritual Energy Fluctuations."
Lin Yuan felt a surge of joy in his heart; he knew Su Jiu'er was providing him with remote support and intelligence. This girl is truly my lucky star!
He took a deep breath, channeling all his Lingqi, preparing to deliver the final blow to Shadow.
Shadow seemed to sense the danger, struggling to rise, but his body was firmly controlled by Lin Yuan's Time Manipulator, unable to move.
Lin Yuan approached Shadow, raised his fist, surrounded by high-frequency vibrating Lingqi, aimed directly at the center of Shadow's chest, and struck down with all his might.
"Boom!"
With a deafening sound, Shadow's body was sent flying by the immense force, crashing against the laboratory wall before hitting the ground hard, motionless and seemingly lifeless.
Lin Yuan let out a sigh of relief; he knew he had won. Finally done with this—it wasn't easy at all.
Just then, the alarm in the laboratory blared suddenly, red lights flashing incessantly as the entire lab began to shake.
"This is bad; the device is about to activate!" Lin Yuan's heart tightened; he knew he had to leave this place quickly.
