The dagger in Su Jiu'er’s hand glinted coldly, aimed directly at Lin Yuan's throat.
Lin Yuan's eyes widened in shock, and the Time Manipulator instinctively activated, freezing time as if the world had come to a standstill.
He seized Su Jiu'er’s wrist, the dagger halting less than a centimeter from his throat.
“Jiu'er, have you lost your mind?!” Lin Yuan shouted, disbelief etched across his face.
But Su Jiu'er's gaze was as cold as ancient ice, a strange smile curling at the corners of her mouth. “Lin Yuan, you’re too naive. Did you really think I would betray the Qi Gong Association?”
A chill swept through Lin Yuan, sinking deep into his core. Could it be… that from the very beginning, Su Jiu'er was an undercover agent sent by the Qi Gong Association?
As time resumed its flow, other members of the infiltration team noticed something was amiss and raised their weapons at Su Jiu'er.
“Jiu'er, what are you doing?” Old Wang asked incredulously.
“Don’t call me sister,” Su Jiu'er sneered. “I’m not your dear sister. From the start, I was here to get close to Lin Yuan and uncover the secrets of the Time Manipulator!”
“You…” Old Wang and the others trembled with rage, unable to comprehend that a comrade they had fought alongside all this time was actually their enemy!
Lin Yuan took a deep breath, forcing himself to remain calm. “Su Jiu'er, why are you doing this?”
“Why?” Su Jiu'er laughed maniacally, her voice filled with madness. “For power! Only by controlling the Time Manipulator can I become a true powerhouse! Only then can I control everything!”
“You're wrong, Jiu'er,” Lin Yuan said solemnly. “Power isn’t meant to control everything; it’s meant to protect.”
“Enough with your nonsense!” Su Jiu'er shouted fiercely. “Today, you all must die!”
With a flick of her wrist, she broke free from Lin Yuan's grip, and the dagger lunged toward him once more. Lin Yuan sidestepped swiftly, narrowly avoiding Su Jiu'er’s attack.
The infiltration operation was progressing smoothly. Lin Yuan and his companions moved like ghosts through the night, silently approaching the perimeter of the Experimental Base. The high-tech defense system area was as heavily guarded as the intelligence reports had described. Under the moonlight, the crisscrossing red Laser Beams resembled a deadly web, instilling fear in anyone who dared to approach. On the ground, some metallic devices could be vaguely seen, emitting a cold gleam; these were the legendary pressure-sensitive landmines. A faint metallic scent mingled with the earthy aroma carried by the night breeze, creating an unsettling atmosphere.
"My goodness, this is even more exaggerated than an iron barrel formation!" Old Wang whispered, his voice tinged with tension. "If we make one wrong step, we might end up as roasted pigs."
"Shh! Keep your voice down," Lin Yuan gestured for silence, his gaze sharp as he scanned the surroundings. "The intel indicates that besides the Laser Beams and landmines, there are also Electromagnetic Pulse traps here. If triggered, our communication devices and Time Manipulator will be rendered useless."
"Doesn't that mean game over?" Xiao Li swallowed hard, his face paling.
"What are you afraid of?" A Qiang clapped Xiao Li on the shoulder, feigning nonchalance. "With Brother Yuan around, no trap is a problem!"
Lin Yuan smiled slightly and activated his Gazing Ability. Before him unfolded a strange sight: Laser Beams, landmines, and Electromagnetic Pulse traps all radiated different colors of energy waves, like dancing musical notes playing a melody of death in the night sky.
"Interesting," Lin Yuan said with a slight smirk. "These high-tech gadgets are child's play in front of my Gazing Ability."
He carefully observed the patterns of the energy fluctuations, quickly calculating the best infiltration route in his mind.
"Follow me," Lin Yuan whispered, his figure flashing as he darted between the Laser Beams like a specter.
Old Wang and the others quickly followed suit, holding their breath and cautiously avoiding both the landmines and Laser Beams.
Suddenly, Old Wang, who was at the back, slipped as he stepped on a loose stone.
"Oh no!" he thought to himself in alarm as he lost his balance and was about to fall onto a pressure-sensitive landmine.
In a split second, Lin Yuan grabbed Old Wang by the collar and pulled him back. "Old Wang, can you be more careful? You almost became a roasted pig!"
"Hehe, thanks for saving my life, Brother Yuan!" Old Wang wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, still shaken by the close call.
However, the stone that Old Wang stepped on triggered a chain reaction. The pressure-sensitive landmine was activated, emitting a dull explosion, followed closely by the activation of surrounding Laser Beams and Electromagnetic Pulse traps.
“Not good!” Lin Yuan's expression changed as he quickly activated the Time Manipulator, causing time to freeze around them.
“Quick! Now’s our chance!” Lin Yuan urged, pushing Old Wang and the others into the Safe Zone.
Then, using his Material Decomposition Ability, Lin Yuan decomposed several key pressure-sensitive landmines into powder, disrupting the chain reaction of the traps.
As time resumed its flow, the attacks from the Laser Beams and Electromagnetic Pulses missed their targets, allowing the infiltration team to narrowly escape disaster.
“Whew, that was close!” Xiao Li sighed in relief, feeling as if her heart might leap out of her chest.
“Brother Yuan, your Time Manipulator and Material Decomposition Ability are incredible!” A Qiang looked at Lin Yuan with admiration.
Lin Yuan smiled and replied, “Don’t celebrate too early; we’ve only just breached the outer defense system. The real challenge lies ahead.”
Although they had successfully averted the crisis, the prolonged use of the Time Manipulator and Material Decomposition Ability had drained Lin Yuan's mental energy significantly. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him and sensed a hint of unease in his heart.
At that moment, a figure suddenly appeared, blocking Lin Yuan's path.
“Su Jiu'er, stop!”
