When Lin Zhen took the memorial and read it carefully, his previously calm expression darkened instantly, like a storm about to break, sending chills down the spine of anyone who witnessed it. At that moment, Zhang Ting was kneeling before Lin Zhen, trembling with fear, not daring to lift his head even slightly, afraid of angering this powerful figure who held sway over the court.
Time passed slowly, and Lin Zhen remained silent, filling the room with a suffocating atmosphere of tension. Although there was no substantial evidence yet, the situation had escalated to a point where any further explanations or defenses seemed utterly futile.
After a long stalemate, Lin Zhen finally spoke slowly, asking, "Zhang Ai Qing, has anyone else seen this memorial?" His voice was soft but carried an invisible pressure.
Zhang Ting felt cold sweat trickling down his back and hurriedly replied, "Your Majesty, I can assure you that only I have seen this memorial!" After saying this, he kept his head bowed, not daring to breathe.
After a moment, Lin Zhen nodded slightly, his tone softening a bit as he said, "Well then, my loyal ministers, you may rise."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Ting felt as if a great weight had been lifted from him. He secretly sighed in relief and cautiously stood up. After rising, he quickly bowed again and said, "Thank you, Your Majesty!"
However, at that moment, Lin Zhen suddenly shifted his tone and said in a deep voice, "As for this case, there is no need to investigate further."
Those few words struck Zhang Ting like a bolt from the blue, leaving him frozen in place after just beginning to relax. He stood there in confusion, completely unsure of how to respond to the situation unfolding before him.
Just then, Lin Zhen furrowed his brow slightly and added, "As for other matters, you will handle them at your discretion. Just do as you see fit!"
Hearing this, Zhang Ting couldn't help but mutter to himself internally: What does 'do as you see fit' mean? How am I supposed to handle this?
However, he dared not voice these thoughts aloud; even if he had ten times the courage, he would never speak such words in front of Lin Zhen. After all, uttering something so rebellious could very well cost him his life. It wasn't just about losing his head; he could be implicated along with his entire family!
Although Zhang Ting had already formed some ideas in his mind—like simply arresting that person without hesitation—such thoughts were fleeting. He knew that acting on them would be tantamount to seeking his own death.
Thus, despite feeling a surge of dissatisfaction and complaints within him, Zhang Ting suppressed his emotions and respectfully replied, "Yes, Your Majesty! I will faithfully obey your command!"
After leaving Lin Zhen's presence, Zhang Ting spent the entire journey deep in thought about what Lin Zhen's words truly meant.
How should one handle the subsequent matters in a way that aligns with His Majesty's wishes while effectively resolving the issues at hand?
Zhang Ting pondered deeply for a long time, and finally, perseverance paid off. After careful consideration and weighing the pros and cons, he devised a relatively feasible solution.
However, even so, Zhang Ting understood very well that the situation had developed to this point, and it was likely that this was as far as it could go. Any further progress or a different outcome seemed nearly impossible.
