After a thorough search, they finally found an inconspicuous inn and settled in. The inn was rather unremarkable and located in a remote area; it would have been difficult to discover it without deliberately looking for it.
Once in their room, the two began to discuss their next steps in hushed tones. Lu An spoke first, "In my opinion, we should head to the county Yamen and inquire if they have any leads regarding the missing persons case."
Lin Feng pondered for a moment before nodding in agreement. "That sounds good."
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window into the room. Lin Feng and Lu An quickly packed their belongings and made their way to the county.
Before long, they arrived at the front of the county Yamen. After explaining their purpose to the attendant at the door, he hurriedly turned and rushed inside to report to the officials.
After a brief wait, a middle-aged man dressed in official robes and with an imposing presence stepped out quickly. He was followed by several guards, exuding an air of authority. Approaching them, the middle-aged man clasped his hands in greeting. "I am Zhang Zihao from Linbo County, here to greet you, esteemed officials."
Lin Feng raised his hand slightly to indicate that there was no need for such formalities. "Zhang Xian, please rise."
Zhang Zihao then led Lin Feng and Lu An into the main hall of the Yamen. The atmosphere in the hall felt somewhat tense. Lin Feng got straight to the point and asked, "His Majesty has sent us to investigate the case of missing persons near Linbo County. What information do you have so far? Please elaborate."
Zhang Zihao replied, "In response to your inquiry, I have dispatched people to gather information. According to villagers, those who went missing have left no trace behind, and there are no signs of struggle at home; it is as if they vanished into thin air. Moreover, all the missing individuals are young men."
Lin Feng frowned in thought for a moment; this was indeed strange. "Have there been any strangers passing through the village?"
Zhang Zihao quickly responded, "Some villagers reported seeing hurried outsiders passing through, but they did not take note of their appearance or characteristics."
Lu An interjected, "My lord, it seems these outsiders are quite suspicious. We should follow this lead and investigate further."
Lin Feng nodded in agreement. "Zhang Xian, arrange for your men to sketch a general description of these outsiders and post it in various places. Also, send people to discreetly inquire about anyone acting suspiciously."
"Yes, my lord. I will take care of it immediately," Zhang Zihao replied.
Lin Feng and Lu An then waited in the Yamen for news.
Half a day later, a guard rushed in with an urgent report. "My lord, someone has come to report that another person has gone missing."
Lin Feng and Lu An exchanged a glance and immediately stood up, preparing to investigate further.
The recent disappearance case had occurred outside the city! As soon as the news broke, it caused quite a stir. Upon hearing this, Lin Feng, known for his detective skills, wasted no time and quickly gathered his team, rushing to the scene of the incident.
Upon arriving at the location, Lin Feng immediately immersed himself in the tense investigation. After a meticulous observation, he soon made a significant discovery: there were very distinct footprints left on the ground.
From the number of these footprints, it appeared that there were around seven or eight individuals involved.
Upon closer inspection of the prints, it was clear that they varied in depth and size. This indicated that the individuals who left these footprints had considerable differences in their physiques—tall and short, heavy and thin, all were represented.
