The old man took the cup of tea but did not drink it immediately. Instead, he raised his head and carefully scrutinized Lin Feng and Lu An with his slightly cloudy yet still sharp eyes for quite a while. After a moment of deep contemplation, he finally lowered his voice and said slowly, "To be honest with you two young gentlemen, there have been frequent reports of people going missing around here for no apparent reason. You should be more cautious, especially since you seem so carefree and unguarded."
Upon hearing this, Lin Feng exchanged a quick glance with Lu An, and both their eyes revealed a hint of indignation. "Have you heard anything specific?" Lin Feng asked.
The old man quickly replied, "No." After saying this, he turned and left without looking back.
At that moment, the shopkeeper hurried over, visibly impatient. He addressed them both, saying, "I suggest you finish your tea and leave quickly. My shop can’t afford any trouble; if we get into legal issues, it would be disastrous!"
Lu An's temper flared at these words. What kind of nonsense is this? He widened his eyes and glared at the shopkeeper, shouting, "Hey! How rude of you to rush us out! Go get Zhang Gui for me!"
Coincidentally, Zhang Gui was busy not far from them. Upon hearing Lu An's shout, he hurried over while apologizing profusely. "I’m so sorry, esteemed guest! It’s my fault for not attending to you properly; I hope you can forgive us!"
However, Lu An was not about to let it go easily. Just as he was preparing to continue his outburst, Lin Feng reached out to stop him and advised, "Let it go. Since they’ve said they’re closing up, let’s not make things difficult for them. Let’s go." With that, Lin Feng stood up first.
Seeing this, although Lu An was still seething with anger inside, he had no choice but to stand up as well and prepare to leave this frustrating place. But just as they reached the door, the shopkeeper foolishly blocked their way again and extended his hand. "Esteemed guests, please take care on your way out. However, about the tea bill… shouldn’t you settle that?"
At this point, Lu An could no longer contain his anger. He swung his sleeve dramatically and pointed at the shopkeeper's nose while shouting, "What tea bill? I didn’t even finish my tea before you rushed us out! You want me to pay? That’s ridiculous! I won’t pay a single cent!"
Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, Zhang Gui quickly intervened to stop the shopkeeper. "Alright, just let them go. Let’s not drag this out any longer."
This time we’ll let it slide; there’s no need to keep pressing the issue. Zhang Gui understood that the fault lay with his shop for mishandling the situation. Even though he felt somewhat aggrieved himself, he knew it was best not to escalate things further. Moreover, he noticed that Lu An and Lin Feng seemed to be from out of town; it was better to avoid unnecessary trouble. If someone went missing after having been in his shop recently, it could lead to serious complications—perhaps even a lawsuit!
After all, human life is precious, and it's not something to be taken lightly. Therefore, it’s better to avoid trouble whenever possible.
Moreover, the few customers sitting in the shop at that moment were all elderly folks, slow in their movements and appearing quite honest. They were unlikely to cause any disturbances. Such elderly individuals had not gone missing, so Zhang Gui was not worried. As long as they remained quietly seated, there was no need to fret about any unexpected situations.
With that, once the two individuals left, the shop quickly returned to its usual state of calm. Everything seemed orderly, as if the earlier incident had never occurred.
After exiting the shop, the two began searching for a place to rest.
