Jin Zi Meng answered the call, acknowledging that she would call back shortly. After hanging up, she moved to the lounge area in the hall.
With her head lowered, she stared at the screensaver on her phone, which displayed a photo of her and her mother. In the picture, her mother wore a radiant smile, while Jin Zi Meng herself looked like a child nestled in her mother's embrace.
Naturally, she felt a wave of sadness wash over her. Her mother had left so suddenly, and there was no way to find the culprit. Although she had a hunch about who was responsible, she couldn’t comprehend why someone could be so cruel.
Her mother had often told her that she was too naive, that being too open-hearted with others wasn’t wise. People needed to keep some things hidden, even from their closest friends; one couldn’t reveal everything.
In the past, she hadn’t understood her mother’s words, but now they resonated with her. When one’s own safety is beyond their control, what else could they truly manage?
Her suspicion towards Li Feng and Zong Caishan stemmed from the blow of losing her mother. Now, everyone seemed untrustworthy to her except for Tong Le and Zong Family Member. She harbored doubts about everyone else, especially after witnessing Zong Caishan’s lecherous demeanor, which heightened her vigilance.
She called Tong Le, and the call connected quickly. Jin Zi Meng briefly explained her situation. On the other end of the line, Tong Le was puzzled. “Zong Caishan? I’ve heard of him, but I don’t know him personally. We haven’t pulled any strings for you; auditions are based on merit alone. If someone gets a role through backdoor connections, it’s unlikely they’ll produce anything worthwhile.”
Jin Zi Meng’s suspicions were confirmed as she hurriedly replied, “Tong Le Jie, this Zong Caishan is really sleazy! He’s nothing like Zong Family Members who command respect without being oppressive. That Zong Caishan and that producer Li Feng give off an impression of being morally bankrupt and disrespectful towards women.”
Tong Le responded, “Zong Zeyu is right here with me; I just asked him about Zong Caishan. He confirmed that this person has been estranged from the Zong Family for years due to his business practices and character clashing with theirs. They had quite a fallout before parting ways.”
Tong Le found it odd. “I didn’t pass your resume to someone named Zong Caishan; I don’t know that producer Li Feng either. Last time, I asked Boss Cai to look out for you; he’s been in the industry for over ten years and is very reliable. How did you end up in contact with these people?”
Jin Zi Meng couldn’t explain it either. “I’m not sure how it happened; they reached out to me for an audition for a supporting role as the third female lead. After a meal together, they offered me the lead role! It feels so frivolous and unreliable.”
“Staying alert is wise,” Tong Le advised. “It’s good you told me about this. For now, keep an eye on Zong Caishan’s resources; however, I suspect that switching from a supporting role to lead is just a trick—there’s no such thing as a free lunch in this world. Plus, I’m concerned that with your mother just passing away, Ke Wenjie might try to take advantage of you. You must report anything significant or trivial to me immediately from now on. Also, avoid any similar gatherings unless absolutely necessary; if you must go, let me know in advance.”
Jin Zi Meng replied earnestly, “I understand, Jie! I’ll keep you updated on everything from now on. I’m grateful you called today; otherwise, I wouldn’t have known how to handle this situation—I might have hesitated for that lead role.”
Taking a deep breath, she spoke more seriously now. “Jie, I want to avenge my mom, but I don’t know what I can do yet. Even though I have no evidence right now, my gut tells me it has to be Ke Wenjie.”
“Before seeking revenge,” Tong Le advised firmly, “you need to stabilize your mind and body first—gather your strength and stay vigilant. Weak individuals cannot seek revenge; you must rise above and confront your enemies directly.”
Feeling emboldened by Tong Le's words, Jin Zi Meng declared confidently, “I understand! I know what I need to do now—I won’t let you down!”
“It’s not about letting me down,” Tong Le clarified gently. “It’s about being true to yourself and honoring your mother’s memory.” She glanced at the time and added, “It’s getting late; you should head home now. Should I have Jiang Zhichao pick you up?”
“No need,” Jin Zi Meng replied quickly. “I’ll take a taxi home right away; I’ve already left.”
“Alright then,” Tong Le said. “Let me know when you get home.”
