Not long after the start of the new school term, the school prepared to hold a celebration fair. Each class was assigned a certain quota of tickets to sell, which led to widespread complaints among the students, who lamented that such tyranny would surely lead to their downfall.
Wang Qiang had promised during the winter break that he would invite his elementary school classmate, Zhang Ruyi, to come visit him in Ningzhou with her boyfriend. Zhang Ruyi was currently in Han Cheng. So when Wang Qiang learned about the upcoming fair, he realized it was the perfect opportunity. He and another female classmate, Zhao Jie, quickly called Zhang Ruyi in Han Cheng, asking her to come along with her boyfriend.
At first, Zhang Ruyi was excited to hear this, but as the time approached, she hesitated. Zhao Jie scolded her, saying that if both of them were going to be so indecisive, they might as well give up. With some reluctance, Zhang Ruyi finally agreed to invite him.
Wang Qiang and Zhao Jie discussed how they could ensure that Zhang Ruyi and her boyfriend would hit it off during this meeting. They wanted to avoid having Zhang Ruyi come back later to complain about any awkwardness; it was indeed a tricky situation they needed to navigate.
On the day of the fair, the weather turned warm. The school was bustling early in the morning as each booth prepared their items. Students hurried back and forth amidst the loud music from the speakers, transforming the usually quiet campus into a lively scene.
Around ten o'clock, Wang Qiang, along with his girlfriend Liu Yuanyuan and Zhao Jie, waited at the school gate for Zhang Ruyi. Zhao Jie had a boy with her—likely one of her two boyfriends—but she couldn't be bothered to introduce him properly to Wang Qiang and Liu Yuanyuan. She simply mentioned his name was Li Feng and continued chatting with Wang Qiang and Liu Yuanyuan.
After a few minutes, Zhang Ruyi finally arrived with her boyfriend, who appeared honest but somewhat dull. He introduced himself as Xin Jian. Wang Qiang remarked on his name being interesting since he had never seen someone use their surname as a first name before; everyone laughed at this.
It was Zhang Ruyi's first time meeting Liu Yuanyuan, and she was surprised to discover that Wang Qiang had such a beautiful girlfriend. No wonder Zhao Jie often seemed to carry a hint of melancholy.
After exchanging pleasantries, the six of them entered the campus and walked around. Zhao Jie and Wang Qiang continuously pointed out various plants and buildings on campus before heading to the fairgrounds where they enjoyed food and games at numerous booths. Zhang Ruyi was quite pleased with how things were arranged; it was clear that she and Xin Jian were being seen as a couple, making intimate gestures like holding hands or leaning on each other feel perfectly natural.
Before noon, they were all already full. Zhao Jie and Li Feng ran into some friends at the fair and temporarily split off from the group. As they passed by Liu Yuanyuan's booth, several classmates—Zhou Jun, Wu Li, and Sun Mei—were there having fun together. They greeted each other enthusiastically while Zhou Jun made an excuse about needing more help at their booth selling hot dumplings and insisted on keeping Liu Yuanyuan there for assistance. He then jokingly asked Wang Qiang if it was okay to borrow his girlfriend for a bit.
Wang Qiang shrugged and laughed that it was fine. Once they moved away a little bit, Zhou Jun sneakily touched Liu Yuanyuan's backside; she scolded him playfully while he grinned and said, "Wang Qiang said it’s okay."
Wang Qiang continued strolling with Zhang Ruyi and the others. As noon approached, many people sought shade from the sun, causing the crowds between booths to thin out. They arrived at a quieter booth where someone called out for Wang Qiang—it was his classmate Zheng Wan. It turned out this booth belonged to Wang Qiang's own class.
"Wang Qiang," Zheng Wan scolded him, "Where have you been all morning? You didn’t come help at all!"
