The figure of the Wolf King loomed over me like a mountain.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still; all I could hear was the pounding of my own heart.
I thought about running.
But how could I move? How could I escape?
Besides, where would I run to?
In my life, I, Tian Qi, had never done anything particularly respectable, but this time, having made up my mind, I couldn't back down.
I fixed my gaze on the Wolf King, a single thought racing through my mind:
Even if it costs me my life, I will fight you!
The Wolf King's claws came crashing down. Instinctively, I tilted my head.
I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder as its razor-sharp claws tore through my clothes, blood instantly staining the snow beneath me.
I gritted my teeth, enduring the excruciating pain as I struggled to roll away.
"Tian Qi!"
The villagers rushed towards me.
But the Wolf King paid them no mind and charged toward them instead.
In just a few exchanges, several villagers fell into pools of blood.
"Damn it, let's do this!"
I picked up the iron chain from the ground once more. This time, even if it meant going down together, I would drag you into that trap.
"They're over there!"
At that moment, a commotion suddenly erupted from the entrance of the valley in the distance.
The Wolf King heard the noise and turned its head, a glint of caution flashing in its eyes.
I followed its gaze.
In the distance, a group of soldiers, guided by the villagers, was running toward us with torches and weapons.
"Tian Qi, Dad, the imperial soldiers have arrived!"
Zhang Erben's voice echoed through the wind and snow.
Seeing more and more soldiers approaching, a flicker of panic crossed the Wolf King's eyes.
It let out a low growl, seemingly warning them not to come closer.
But those soldiers were already blinded by rage. Armed with torches and wooden sticks, and even a few with spears, they charged at the Wolf King.
Realizing the dire situation, the Wolf King shook its head and lunged toward me, as if wanting to deliver one last blow before the villagers arrived.
“Tian Qi, run!”
The Village Chief shouted as he lunged forward to shield me.
The Wolf King's claws slashed through the Village Chief's clothing in an instant, blood splattering everywhere. The Village Chief let out a terrible scream and collapsed to the ground.
I was also thrown aside by the impact.
The beast, undeterred, became even more frenzied.
It charged at me once more.
I struggled to evade it, but I simply had no strength left.
This time, it opened its blood-red jaws wide and lunged for my throat with a vicious bite.
In that moment, I suddenly realized that I had lost everything.
My life, my dignity, even my hope had been trampled beneath the Wolf King's feet.
I recalled my master's words once again.
I closed my eyes and silently murmured:
“Master, I truly did my best this time.”
Just as the Wolf King was about to sink its teeth into my throat, I suddenly heard a whistling sound slicing through the air.
The arrows shot by the soldiers illuminated the entire valley in an instant with their fiery tips.
The Wolf King was startled by this sudden attack and took a few steps back.
Seizing the opportunity, I rolled to the side, gasping for breath, my chest feeling as if it were crushed by a massive stone, nearly suffocating me.
I looked up to see the soldiers had rushed to our side, brandishing torches, spears, and bows, launching a fierce assault on the Wolf King.
The Wolf King was intimidated by the situation, its eyes betraying a hint of panic.
Struggling to rise, I shouted loudly, "Drive it into the trap and burn it alive!"
Hearing my words, the villagers and soldiers quickly surrounded it, pushing it toward the direction of the trap.
Seeing itself cornered, the Wolf King suddenly leaped toward the crowd.
Several villagers were caught off guard and knocked to the ground by the Wolf King, their screams echoing through the valley.
Witnessing this scene, my heart felt like it was being torn apart.
