In the three thousand years of the Yuanjing era, the path of immortality flourished. The immortal sects and noble families stood tall, appearing lush and prosperous on the surface, but in reality, it was a world where the weak were preyed upon by the strong.
I was born in the the Bai Family's branch near Yun Shui City, where every member, regardless of gender, possessed the Water Spirit Root. The Water Spirit Root was gentle and nurturing, best suited to help those old monsters whose lifespans were nearing their end and who had no hope of breaking through their stagnation.
Since my great-great-great-grandfather stopped at the Foundation Establishment stage, our family had to send a Furnace Cauldron to an immortal sect every ten years. Now, it was my turn.
As the promised day with the Wu Yuan Sect drew closer, my mother’s tears had not ceased. She held my hand tightly, her grip painful.
“A Ning, it’s because I’m useless that I can’t protect you…”
I held back the bitterness in my heart and wiped her tears away.
“Mother, it’s not your fault.”
“This is the rule of the the Bai Family; no one can change it.”
My younger brother, Bai Qing, also cried until his eyes were swollen, clinging tightly to my arm.
“Elder Sister… A Qing doesn’t want you to go…”
I patted his head, feeling a wave of sorrow wash over me.
A Qing was exceptionally gifted; even at a young age, he had already shown remarkable talent for cultivation. Unfortunately, he was born into our family. Ten years from now, he would likely face the same fate.
“Qing’er, be good and listen to Mother. Cultivate well.”
“In the future… when you become as powerful as Uncle Ancestor, Elder Sister will come back…”
Uncle Ancestor, Bai Jin, the head of the the Bai Family, had advanced to the mid-stage of Golden Core thanks to resources exchanged from our branch.
If only… but it was too early to say anything now; it was also too late.
The day of parting had finally arrived.
In the early morning, a magnificent Airship slowly appeared, hovering above the Bai Residence. The hull was engraved with runes, emitting a faint glow that signified the identity of its occupants. I knew that the people sent to fetch me had arrived.
Taking a deep breath, I cast one last glance at my mother and younger brother before stepping forward. Standing at the forefront of the Airship was my childhood friend, Gu Chen, whom I had not seen in three years. He wore the light purple disciple robe of the Wu Yuan Sect, and a bright yellow badge at his waist indicated his status as an inner disciple. He looked as handsome and refined as he had when he made me promises years ago.
"Ning Ning, once I become an inner disciple, we will become partners in the Dao. Then you will be safe!" With those words, he had given me three years of daydreams.
Seeing him again, however, his expression was proud and indifferent, completely devoid of the gentle affection he once showed me. When he noticed me, a flicker of complex emotion crossed his face before he returned to his calm demeanor.
"Bai Ning, long time no see," he said in a detached tone.
"Gu Chen..." I softly called his name, instinctively taking two steps closer to him.
"By order of Elder Feng, I am here to take you to the Wu Yuan Sect." His voice was businesslike as he waved his hand dismissively and turned away from me.
Several disciples from the Wu Yuan Sect stepped forward, expressionless, and "invited" me onto the Airship. My mother and brother watched me with tear-filled eyes, their figures appearing particularly fragile in the morning light.
I closed my eyes and allowed the Airship to ascend slowly, distancing myself from my hometown and my loved ones. They left me in a dimly lit room on the lowest level of the Airship and never checked on me again. Gu Chen did not appear either. The room was dark and cramped, with only a small window through which I could hear the sounds from outside.
"Do we really not need to worry about her?" a female disciple's voice echoed from afar.
"She won't die, so what's the point?" another male disciple replied dismissively.
"But I heard that Senior Brother Chen knows her, which is why he volunteered to make this trip."
"She's just a Furnace Cauldron; why would it be worth a special trip? Senior Brother Chen is only going to get the Spirit Flame Fruit to cheer up Senior Sister, and this is just a side errand."
