The air was thick with tension.
Shattered glass from a broken vial reflected fragments of moonlight on the floor. Larry Fower stood at the doorway, his face pale. "Luke, you promised..."
"What did I promise?" Luke Dunphy scoffed. "Promised to let you keep using those unknown substances to slowly poison her?"
I was taken aback. "What do you mean?"
"Sonia Ramirez," Larry Fower approached me, "don't believe him; he is just..."
Before he could finish, Luke Dunphy stepped in front of me. "Enough!"
I had never seen him lose control like this. Under the moonlight, he radiated a dangerous aura.
"You think I don't know?" He glared at Larry Fower. "What did you mix into the drugs you gave her?"
Larry Fower fell silent for a moment before suddenly laughing. "It seems you've done your homework."
He turned to me. "Sonia Ramirez, do you know why your Wolf Nature has become increasingly difficult to control over the years?"
My heart skipped a beat.
"Because those drugs," he sneered, "contained a catalyst."
"You..." I couldn't believe it. "Why?"
"Why?" His eyes suddenly gleamed with fervor. "Of course, it's to awaken the purest blood of the Wolf Clan within you!"
"Did you know? You are the last pureblood of the Wolf Clan. The secrets of the entire Wolf Clan are hidden in your blood!"
I took a step back, colliding into Luke Dunphy's embrace. He immediately tightened his arms around me protectively.
"You've lost your mind," Luke Dunphy's voice was chillingly cold. "To conduct research, you would destroy her like this?"
"Destroy?" Larry Fower laughed heartily. "Luke, weren't you getting close to her for the same reason? We're all the same..."
"Shut up!" Luke Dunphy shouted in fury, throwing a punch.
Larry Fower tilted his head to dodge and slid a syringe out from his sleeve.
My pupils constricted as I recognized it as a forced stimulant.
In a flash, Luke Dunphy grabbed his wrist and twisted it.
The syringe fell, but Larry Fower kicked out, sending the substance flying in my direction.
"Watch out!" Luke Dunphy tried to pull me away, but it was too late.
The needle pierced my arm, and the cold liquid surged into my veins.
In an instant, I felt every drop of blood in my body ignite with fire.
"Ah!" I cried out in agony, curling up on the ground.
This reaction was more intense than any I had experienced before.
"Sonia Ramirez!" Luke Dunphy attempted to lift me, but I pushed him away.
"Don't come near me..." I could already feel my body changing. "I can't control it..."
Larry Fower laughed excitedly from the side. "Perfect! The purest Wolf Clan bloodline, finally..."
Before he could finish his sentence, Luke Dunphy kicked him hard in the chest.
Larry Fower slammed against the wall and spat out blood.
"Luke..." he wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. "Are you really going to betray the organization for her?"
Organization? I struggled to lift my head. "What organization?"
"Wolf Hunter," Larry Fower replied with a mocking grin. "He is the heir of the Wolf Hunting Organization, the one that specializes in hunting us Wolf Clan."
What?!
I looked at Luke Dunphy in disbelief.
He stood in the moonlight, his face contorted with pain like I had never seen before.
"Is it true?" I gritted my teeth against the pain. "You got close to me just to..."
"No," he crouched down, trying to touch me. "Wan Wan, let me explain..."
"Don't touch me!" I screamed, retreating. "You're all lying to me, you just want to use me..."
The changes in my body were becoming more intense, and I knew I was about to lose control.
In the midst of the chaos, I caught sight of a painting in Luke Dunphy's study.
The White Wolf running under the moonlight.
In a daze, a vague memory surged forth.
Fifteen years ago, on that snowy night.
I remembered biting someone, the faint scent of pine lingering on him.
Just like... the scent on Luke Dunphy at this moment.
"Don't," I cradled my head and stepped back. "Don't remember..."
"Wan Wan!" Luke Dunphy grabbed me tightly. "Don't be afraid, I'm here..."
But it was already too late.
Under the moonlight, my form began to change.
Just before losing consciousness completely, I heard Luke Dunphy whispering in my ear, "This time, let me protect you."
In the final moment before my awareness slipped into darkness, I felt his scorching kiss land on the nape of my neck.
