A few fluffy Misha were playing under the Apple Tree, while two mother bears soaked in the small river of the backyard. The summer heat was still absurdly high. Xu Li and a few soon-to-retire old men lined up by the river, fishing and occasionally taking a sip of their homemade beer.
The Cornfield had been weeded and sprayed with pesticides, and now it was just a matter of waiting for the corn to ripen slowly. The children were on summer vacation; some traveled with their parents, while others, excelling in their studies, were enrolled in various tutoring classes at home. The remaining kids stayed indoors, enjoying the air conditioning, waiting until evening to come out for group activities. The two mother bears splashed around in the river, which annoyed Xu Li, who grumbled, “Fat girls, roll away; don’t disturb my fishing.”
The two mother bears glanced at the angry man and huffed before heading back to the yard. A few Little Bear Cubs immediately rushed to their mothers, eagerly drinking milk, while Gas Can and Dahua wobbled out of the house.
Looking around and not finding her cubs, she dug her claws into the ground to relieve herself, then kicked some dirt over her mess before returning inside to lounge around.
In the study, Anna, Eva, Daria, and the pregnant Lana were laughing and playing mahjong. Irina sat nearby engrossed in a shooting game, her left fingers tapping rapidly on the keyboard while wearing headphones.
At the ranch, Zhuo Ya wore a tight tank top and denim shorts, paired with low-cut boots as she worked on her beloved horse’s hooves in the stable. Miwofu squatted nearby, lighting a cigarette and glancing at her boots. “Aren’t you afraid of getting athlete's foot wearing those in this heat?”
“Shut up,” Zhuo Ya retorted with a curse, slowly filing down the horse's hoof. “At least it’s better than stepping in dung.”
“That’s true,” he nodded as he stood up and used tongs to grab a red-hot horseshoe. Zhuo Ya took it from him, measured it briefly against the hoof before pressing it down with a sizzling sound that released a puff of white smoke. After leaving an imprint, she cooled the horseshoe down. “What happened this time? Your kid got into another fight with Ivan’s daughter?”
“Uh…” Miwofu scratched his nose awkwardly. “Kids sometimes take play too seriously. Just like when we were young; you always joked around, and when others joked back at you, you took it seriously and ended up hitting us. Today’s kids are pretty much like us back then.”
“Your Flamekiel Kolokorichev is too mischievous; you should keep a better eye on him. That kid loves to bully others.”
Zhuo Ya finished nailing the horseshoe and filed it down before setting it aside. She put a bridle and saddle on Black Horse and led it out for a walk while Miwofu shrugged and packed up her things, muttering under his breath, “That’s still better than you; who wanted to play with you when we were kids? Tch.”
Black Horse galloped across the vast ranch with Zhuo Ya riding atop. She stretched her arms out and closed her eyes, enjoying the rush of warm wind. Before she knew it, Black Horse had brought her to the edge of the ranch’s forest. Under Zhuo Ya’s control, it reared up on its hind legs and pawed at the ground.
Suddenly, a loud howl echoed from within the trees. A white cat with two yellow spots—Dahua—burst out from the forest carrying its prey in its mouth. It leaped over a two-meter-high fence effortlessly before approaching Zhuo Ya and dropping its catch onto the grass.
Zhuo Ya raised an eyebrow upon seeing three medium-sized wild boars laid out before her. This made her frown; if three tigers could catch wild boars, it meant there was no shortage of them in the forest. Realizing this, she pulled on the reins and lightly nudged Black Horse’s belly with her boots. With a neighing sound, Black Horse took off towards the Cattle Shed while Xiaobai followed closely behind with its prize in tow.
