As the first heavy snowfall blanketed the vast pasture, the ranch, which had been bustling for nearly four months, finally welcomed a brief period of rest. Families gathered in their wooden homes, warming themselves by the fire and sipping drinks, or playing cards and chatting in small groups.
Bang!
Kozilov was reclining on the carpet, gently caressing his wife's increasingly prominent belly when his friends Larry and Zhukov burst through the door. Valentin rubbed his slightly frostbitten hands together and exclaimed, "Quick, quick! Let's head to the Cattle Shed's feed storage!"
"What’s going on?"
Little Rascal's once joyful eyes sharpened instantly. "Is someone causing trouble in our village?"
"What are you thinking?"
Valentin replied excitedly, "Xiong Da and Xiong Er from the Village Chief's House took two pregnant bears to the feed storage, and Alexei and Yegor are about to come to blows."
"What do bears have to do with them? Are they bored out of their minds?"
Kozilov kissed Bella on the forehead, then reluctantly put on his clothes and boots before heading outside. After all, Alexei was his brother-in-law; he had to help family. Yegor wasn’t part of his circle anyway—who cares about him?
"Hey, don’t push your luck!"
Alexei’s thick fingers were almost touching Yegor's nose when the latter swatted them away. "That line should be mine! Our Cornfield is so vast that a dozen highland cattle can’t possibly guard it all. Misha should give us those bears; we have plenty of farmers and reindeer herders here. What’s wrong with having a few bears watch over Cornfield?"
"Shut your mouth!"
A dozen men pointed at their opponents, cursing loudly. Alexei wore a scowl as he argued, "The bears from the Village Chief's House are good; their cubs will surely be smart. They should belong to our patrol team. With bears patrolling with us, our area would be much safer."
"Then we won’t take them?"
Yegor’s side began shouting back angrily. Ivan was part of this camp too, and Victor wouldn’t let his own children suffer either; he rallied a group to join in cursing at the patrol team. More and more men rushed over upon hearing the commotion.
In the end, it was unclear who threw the first punch, but two groups clashed right outside the feed storage in the snow. Alexei and his friends were indeed skilled fighters, but most of the younger generation in the village had trained under Andreev for years. With numbers on their side, neither group gained an advantage.
"Stop fighting! Please stop!"
Women and children shouted from the sidelines, but the boys wouldn’t let their families be at a disadvantage either; they charged in as well, escalating the situation further.
Thud thud thud thud thud thud!
When Xu Li arrived driving his vehicle, both groups were exchanging blows back and forth. He jumped out and shouted a barrage of curses: "What the hell are you doing?"
Nearly a hundred people of all ages slowly ceased their actions, rising to brush off snow from their footprints while wiping away blood from their noses. The boys were pulled away by their mothers or sisters, who shielded them protectively.
Xu Li was furious. "I was just at home enjoying a hot pot for lunch! And you guys decide to start a fight?"

"Now tell me—what's this all about?"
He lit a cigarette and swept his gaze over the faces of the men. Yegor, confident that he had arrived earlier than Alexei, and knowing that Yisha was also in the office and had some influence with the village chief, raised his hand to wipe the blood from his nose.
"Here’s the thing," he began. "Not long ago, two mother bears came to the feed storage. We were pretty scared at first, but then Xiong Da and Xiong Er showed up. They even brought some food for the mother bears. So, I gathered my courage and made a joke. I said, 'Xiong Da, are these your wives?'"
