They eventually left, taking with them the large sum of money given by Xu Li, returning to their long-lost families or heading to the big city to start their own lives. Only Daria, who had always been lonely and helpless, chose to remain in the empty wooden cabin.
At the age of twenty-eight, Daria sat leisurely on a thick wool blanket, sipping her freshly brewed milk tea and enjoying delicious chocolate cookies while watching a movie. Suddenly, she turned down the volume of her computer as heavy footsteps approached. Listening to the familiar sound, a smile slowly spread across her face.
"I knew it, I knew it!"
When the man entered the room, Daria squealed and jumped into his arms, wrapping herself tightly around him. Xu Li supported her with one hand under her backside while gently patting the back of her head with the other. "Aren't you going to regret it?"
"Never! I will never regret it!"
Daria clung tightly to the man's neck, inhaling the faint scent of his shower gel. "I knew you wouldn't leave me here all alone."
"I’m taking you somewhere."
Xu Li carried her to the living room, helped her put on a coat and shoes, and they drove off at high speed. By nine o'clock the next evening, they arrived at Irkutsk's home where Irina had already prepared dinner. It wasn’t anything extravagant but it was certainly edible.
As Daria ate a pork chop, she glanced at Xu Li beside her and then at Irina across from her. Xu Li smiled and didn’t hide anything from her; he shared their relationship openly, ruffling her hair affectionately. "There won't be anyone else. You can sleep wherever you want—at my place in Irkutsk or in your own house—it's up to you."
"You brought me here just to tell me this?" Daria asked in confusion. "You could have just told me at home; why come all this way?"
"For the next half month, we’ll be staying here. I need to take you to a private clinic."
Xu Li looked at Daria with a smile and slowly began to reveal something that was a huge secret for her.
Village Chief Grandpa was old; Grandma was old too. Uncle and Aunt were old; Zhuo Ya was young; Irina was young too.
Xu Li cheerfully grabbed a handful of candies and handed them to two little ones, then distributed cigarettes to younger relatives who came to pay New Year’s greetings. After chatting for a while with Xiao Nianqing and his wife, he took the kids to visit another family. In the yard, Xiao Nianqing followed their elders orderly into the house to pay New Year’s respects to the village chief's family—this had become an unspoken tradition in the village.
The village chief was old.
Yisha held her baby daughter as she entered the living room with her husband. Yegor laughed heartily while greeting the village chief's family with a wide grin. Yisha wore a nice outfit and had put on light makeup; she smiled as she watched the village chief give candies to their child. Her eyes briefly glanced at Daria standing next to Anna, raising an eyebrow but saying nothing.
In the afternoon, she watched television in the living room while Yegor went over to Gennadi Family for mahjong. Estimating the time, he called Daria, and soon after she rode Xiong Er leisurely over to their house. Yisha brought some apples and potatoes for Xiong Er while everyone lounged in the living room munching away.
"I can hardly believe it," Daria said, "seeing you this morning felt just like when I first saw you thirteen years ago in prison."
Yisha envied Daria and reached out to touch her collagen-rich face. "How do you do it?"
