"Ivan," said the voice on the other end of the phone, growling, "you can't be soft-hearted. This woman is a trouble while she's alive; it's better to end it. No one will check on her where you are. Just give her a handful of rice and toss her into a wolf's den. It's better this way."
Xu Li thought for a moment and replied, "Her husband is the real menace. Eleven years isn't too long; this woman can stay in the village and eventually find another man to start over, but only if her husband is out of the picture."
"Alright, I'll make arrangements on my end."
After hanging up, he put his phone away and rubbed his face. "That girl is such a headache."
Anna and Eva sat silently with pursed lips, aware of the situation but waiting to see how Xu Li would handle it.
When Xu Li returned to the bedroom, the woman was still sitting on the bed. She had set aside the breast pump and was holding her daughter and infant close, casting a fearful glance at the man entering. "I won't report you; I really won't. Do you need a maid? I can work for you if you provide food for my children."
"It's clear you love your husband," Xu Li said slowly as he took a seat.
The woman gently shook her head. "The cost of living in Irkutsk is too high. My job alone can't support two children, especially since my little girl is only four months old. I need my husband to work and help raise them a bit."
"My husband used to treat me well, but then he got into gambling and drinking. Even so, he managed to bring in money; at least the kids wouldn't go hungry, and we wouldn't be without heat in winter."
At this point, she glanced at Xu Li. "Actually, I saw everything that night—a young girl shot him dead. My husband didn't even have money for a gun."
Her words made Xu Li furrow his brow, but all she wanted was to survive with her children. Remembering what that uncle had said to her, she gritted her teeth and continued, "I can divorce my husband if you take me in. I'll do anything—feeding pigs, milking cows, cooking, washing clothes—whatever it takes. Just give my children something to eat."
The woman set her children aside without hesitation, shedding her tattered clothes and pulling back her disheveled hair with newfound courage as she met his gaze. "Even if you want me for yourself, I can accept that as long as you support my children's education. I'm still young and clean; my husband is the only one who's touched me."
If you want a better life for yourself and your two children, show him your best side. Your gambling husband is finished; think about your kids—do you want them to suffer?
Or would you rather abandon them to an orphanage where they'd grow up mocked as unwanted bastards? Lana, reporting him won't help; even if you're successful in getting him out, how will you repay his massive gambling debts? Besides becoming a prostitute for those people, what else can you do?
I'll take you to his house; you can pretend to be pitiful at his doorstep. He'll surely take you in if he feels sorry for you. As long as you're in his house, your kids won't have to worry about their education—they'll be well taken care of for life!
The uncle's words echoed in her mind; she had no choice but to gamble on this chance. If she won, she'd never have to worry again; if she lost, she'd be left wandering with her children. But she was still young and beautiful; with her body as an asset, supporting her kids wouldn't be an issue!
Throughout all this, she never considered abandoning her burdensome daughter. She didn't want her child to follow in her footsteps—abandoned by her mother as a child and then deceived by her current husband who took advantage of her vulnerability after sweet-talking her into bed while she struggled to save up from odd jobs.
