He waved his hand cautiously as he approached the moose. He had almost forgotten that he could communicate with animals, but usually, he instinctively chose to ignore this ability while staying on the ranch.
"Hey there, buddy, having a snack?" Xu Li grinned as he walked toward the largest moose, greeting it in Mandarin. A few little ones immediately shrank back in fear behind a doe, while the male moose stepped back warily, asking, "What do you want?"
"This is my territory. If you’re here looking for food, shouldn’t you ask for your host's permission first?" As he spoke, he moved closer, and the moose retreated, both of them eyeing each other warily.
"You're making this less fun," Xu Li said, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it. The brief flash of flame made the moose back away several steps. "What are you trying to do? Don’t come any closer!"
"Let’s make a deal," he suggested, pointing at the white calf moose. "I’ll take that little guy back to raise as a companion for my child. The rest of you can stay here and even live on my ranch; there’s plenty of food there. What do you say?"
"Not a chance! We are free and noble moose!" The male moose dashed forward a few steps, prompting Xu Li to retreat cautiously while pulling out the shotgun slung over his shoulder. He fired two shots into the ground, startling the male moose into a frantic retreat. "Run! This bastard wants to catch our kids! He’s not one of the good ones!"
Seeing the moose darting into the woods, Xu Li shouted loudly, "Get moving! Catch that white one!"
Torches suddenly lit up from all directions in the forest, accompanied by gunfire that sounded like firecrackers. The sight frightened a dozen moose into a panic. The men were also scared but felt emboldened by the fact that these large creatures were so easily spooked.
Gennady raised his net gun and charged forward as the white calf moose ran around in chaos, pulling the trigger: "Bang!"
The little guy stumbled after just two steps and fell to the ground, flailing its limbs. The doe tried to rush to its aid but was pushed back by Yegor and others wielding torches, forming a circle around her. Xu Li approached with a cold smile: "Heh heh heh, run if you can."
"Please let us go! We’ll move right away!"
"Sure, moving in with me is fine too."
Xu Li took the tranquilizer gun handed to him by Larry and aimed briefly before pulling the trigger. The others followed suit; these creatures were large enough that a couple more shots wouldn’t kill them. The injured moose broke through the human encirclement and bolted into the woods, leaving behind several frightened fawns.
"String those little guys together with rope! Everyone follow me!" He ran into the forest with his gun in hand while Gennady and the others pursued him. Only Victor and Andreev stayed behind with four Xiao Qing, taking off their slings and pinning one deer kid down to the ground.
"Hoo!"
"Huff huff."
Xiong Da and Xiong Er acted as laborers, dragging a crooked-eyed moose into the newly organized storage area. Inside, several other moose had already been moved into the low fence area. Valery was still building new low fences with his son and others while chatting cheerfully as they transported freshly cut logs.
Makarov was a young male fawn. Alexander grinned at the smoking Xu Li and nodded slightly. "I'll take him back first. The other Moose are being taken care of. Once we tame some of their wildness, we can figure out a way to return them to the pasture."
