"Just tell them, what about you?"
Victor's wife said with annoyance as she playfully slapped him. "With so much delicious food, you can't just keep talking nonsense."
"Hey, I was just joking!"
The big guy quickly used his fork to pick up a piece of crab leg and handed it to his wife. "Try this! The last time we had crab legs was at that wedding last year, remember?"
The others at the table chuckled and each took a piece. It's truly rare to enjoy a meal prepared by the village chief himself. You could only have such a feast during weddings or the year-end reunion dinner; otherwise, it was hard to come by.
Uncle Xu Li, after finishing his tasks, took off his blue coat and accepted the wine cup handed to him by Daria. He approached the couple, and Ivanov quickly stood up with his cup in hand. Nadia followed suit, glancing nervously at the strong man in front of her. His face matched his physique, which was quite intimidating!
"Here’s to wishing you both a happy life together."
After finishing the toast with the couple, he took out two prepared red envelopes from his pocket and handed one each to Nadia and Ivanov. "These are for you both. But Uncle is giving them to you. You can settle down here in our village without worry. From now on, all of this guy's salary will be under your control. If he dares to be rude to you, just come find Uncle; I’ll back you up."
"Thank you, Uncle."
Nadia felt a bit shy and secretly scolded herself for being intimidated by such a kind elder.
Everyone dug into the food; there was plenty more in the kitchen.
After greeting the guests, Xu Li went over to sit at his wife's table, nestled between Anna and Eva. He shared a drink with Andreev and Valery. After they finished eating, Andreev's wife and little daughter quickly cleared the table so that Daria and the others could eat, while also taking off their aprons and putting them on.
Andreev made a face of jealousy as he clicked his tongue and shook his head dramatically. "Ah, Gennady really has it easy!"
"Get lost!"
Xu Li shot him an amused glance. "If you want to blame someone, blame your two sons! Who told them not to stay in the village? Who else can you blame?"
"Exactly!"
Zhukov, sitting next to Andreev, seemed quite tipsy and kept flattering Xu Li. "My Uncle is so easygoing! The second son deserves it; he brought this upon himself!"
The young man leaned forward but then lowered his head in a pitiful manner while rubbing his head. Andreev put down his hand with a look of disdain. "With that little drinking capacity, don’t embarrass yourself next time!"
"You need to know how to hold back when drinking."
Eva rubbed Zhukov's head gently. "He’s not very bright to begin with; if you hit him more, he’ll just get dumber."
Aunt Zhukov pouted in frustration as he stuffed a large piece of roasted lamb into his mouth. "I’m full!"
After saying that, he got up and slipped away with several little ones who were giggling as they ran outside with freshly lit firecrackers in hand. Their pockets were bulging; there must be plenty of firecrackers inside! He wanted to join them for some fun.
Xu Li and the others continued eating and drinking when suddenly Valery's granddaughter came running over in tears, her greasy little hands shaking Xu Li's thigh vigorously while crying out loud. "Grandpa Village Chief! Uncle Zhukov stole my firecrackers! Waaaah!"
Andreev felt as if his face was about to be thrown away in embarrassment. He got up and pulled the belt from his waist as he walked out.
