A few wild wolves crawled on all fours in the snow, baring their teeth at the approaching humans. Gennady let out a cold chuckle and was the first to pull the trigger. 0

Bang! Bang! Bang! 0

The sound of gunfire was muffled by the cold wind, but the bullets were unmistakable. One by one, the spinning bullets struck the wolves, and as soon as they opened fire, gunshots echoed from various directions. Before any wolf could pounce on these tall prey, a bullet pierced its body, leaving it lying in the snow, foaming at the mouth. Those fortunate enough were killed instantly, while others struggled in their last moments. 0

Bang! 0

Yegor shot a wolf that was still thrashing about, knowing that a complete wolf head was crucial for making hats and couldn't be wasted. 0

A few more wolves managed to escape, howling mournfully in the swirling snow, each cry more sorrowful than the last. 0

Gennady spat to the side and said, "Form groups of three and check around to make sure those beasts haven't run off." 0

Yegor and Victor followed closely behind Gennady while the other three formed their own group. They circled around the two-meter-high fence and confirmed there was no danger before they cheerfully collected the wolf carcasses and dragged them back to their respective wooden cabins for patrol rest. 0

They managed to gather four wolves, two of which were badly damaged, much to Yegor's dismay. Gennady closed the door and took a swig from his vodka bottle. "You can take these two back intact; I have plenty of wolf pelts at home anyway." 0

Victor grinned widely. "I don't lack for this stuff either. You came late; if you stay at the ranch a few more years, you won't be short on wolf pelts. We encounter wolf packs every winter; it just depends on their numbers." 0

Yegor lit cigarettes for both of them. He had only been here for less than three years; during the first two years, he was responsible for feeding cattle and sheep. This year, due to a shortage of manpower, he had been temporarily assigned to night watch duty. The three gathered around the fireplace, drinking and eating Xun Yu and Meat Sausage. 0

"Hey, I must say, Yisha's cooking is really good—much better than my Natasha's." 0

"Hahaha! Be careful; your Natasha might not let you sleep in bed!" Victor laughed as he playfully patted Gennady on the shoulder. Yegor chuckled and raised his glass. After a few rounds of drinks, Gennady and Victor decided to stop since they needed to patrol together later that night. They wouldn’t joke around with their lives. 0

After finishing his meal and drink, Yegor nodded to both men before sinking into a chair by the fireplace and falling into a deep sleep. Gennady and Victor turned on the television and connected an old gaming console to the screen. The two men in their forties happily played Contra, stepping outside every hour and a half to check around as night wore on. 0

The next morning at the cafeteria of Cattle Shed No. 1, dozens of men sat together for breakfast. In front of the cafeteria door lay over ten frozen wolf carcasses. Xu Li kicked one with his foot while holding a cigarette, selecting a relatively intact wolf with a unique color to skin and cure it later so that the village women could make Irina a wolf skin hat with ears and tail. 0

After breakfast, as Yegor prepared to head back home, he noticed that one of his desired wolf carcasses had been chosen by the village chief. He smacked his lips in disappointment but picked up another one to take home instead. He thought that he could always choose another next time. 0
