Xu Li and Xu Haigui had a drink, and soon other younger members also stood up to toast. Xu Haigui beamed with joy as Lao San and Zhuo Ya downed a full cup of liquor in one go. Xu Haigui couldn't help but raise an eyebrow, saying, "Take it easy, girl."
"It's fine," Zhuo Ya replied, shaking her head. She then filled her glass again and raised an eyebrow at Xu Lei, asking, "Want to join?"
"Huh?" Xu Lei grinned and downed his drink in one gulp. The spicy liquor burned his throat, making him grimace. After a while of eating and drinking at the large table, Xu Lei turned to Xu Li with a smile and said, "Can you do me a favor?"
"Sure," Xu Li replied.
"I have a few artists in my company," Xu Lei continued with a smirk. "Hehe."
Xu Li shot him a sideways glance. "I've written over ten songs for you. You should be able to make five artists famous by now; isn't that enough?"
"Not quite," Xu Lei lit a cigarette for him. "There's a girl in my company whose voice and looks are top-notch, but she doesn't have the right songs. I’ve had her try those songs you wrote, but they just don’t fit her vibe. I’d like to invite you to the company to create a few songs tailored to her."
Xu Li didn’t refuse. Helping a few seniors gain fame could also benefit his own son once Lao Si and Old Five made their debut; it was a win-win situation!
The next morning, he followed Xu Lei to Pinnacle Entertainment. The receptionists were a few young girls who quickly pulled out their phones, eagerly asking for photos with Xu Li. Xu Lei stepped aside, aware that the company group chat had mentioned that Xu Li, known as Xu Father, would be coming in today to help create suitable tracks for the artists.
Zhang Shaohan was petite with a bright and crisp voice, singing contemporary songs in the unique soft tone of Bay Province. Listening to her made Xu Li feel weak in the knees. He sat in Xu Lei's Boss Chair, resting his elbows on the desk as he watched the girl for quite some time; her face reminded him of a star from his dreams—her name was almost identical.
Tap tap tap.
He lit a cigarette and rhythmically tapped his fingers on the table as classic songs flashed through his mind. He waved his hand dismissively, saying, "These melodies are too soft. You can head back for now; I'll see if I have something more suitable."
"Thank you, Xu Father!" she exclaimed.
"Xu Father?" Xu Li was taken aback for a moment before chuckling, "Alright, off you go."
As soon as Zhang Shaohan left, Xu Lei hurried over with a mischievous grin and raised an eyebrow suggestively, "Want to have some fun?"
"Are you out of your mind? She's an employee of our company! You just want to hand her over to me like that?"
Xu Li's expression immediately soured, but Xu Lei remained unfazed. "This industry is just that dirty. My company is the only one without all those tricks. If those young girls went to other entertainment companies, they would have changed completely. For fame and money, they don't care about their bodies. Even for a minor hit song, they would satisfy any request!"
"You have quite a few artists in your company, haven't you? How many have you been involved with?"
Xu Lei scratched his chin and thought for a moment. "I can't remember; there have been too many. They come on to me, and when I'm tired of them, I just pay them off. I'm not as naive as you are. To me, women are just that—nothing special. I have money; why should I hang myself on one tree? It's a straightforward transaction: I pay them for their bodies, and we both get what we want."
"What about Zhang Shaohan? Have you had any dealings with her?"
Xu Li fixed his gaze on Xu Lei. "If that girl becomes famous and runs off as soon as her contract ends, you won't come out unscathed."
