As soon as they got out of the car, Lao Si happily embraced the Old Couple. Having grown a bit taller, they chuckled as they approached Xu Lei, who greeted them with a teasing remark, "Wow, you've grown so tall!"
Xu Lei pinched the arms of his two nephews, feeling their solid muscles—much sturdier than the chubby flesh he remembered!
Xu Haigui looked at his eldest son, whom he hadn't seen in over a decade, and felt a sudden awkwardness. His nose tinged with emotion and his eyes reddened. Xu Li glanced at the elder before letting out a quiet sigh. He leaned down and gently hugged him, saying, "Long time no see."
"I'm sorry, Auntie. Please don't blame your father; if you must blame someone, blame me," he added.
Kong Yan Hong stepped forward, wanting to grasp the man's large hand but was instead pulled into an embrace. His voice remained deep and hoarse as he replied, "There's nothing to blame. After all these years, I've come to terms with it. At least you've been good to my two sons."
After releasing Kong Yan Hong, he introduced his wife to the boys: "Anna, this is Eva; she has a cute little eating mole on her cheek."
"Hello, Uncle!"
"Hello, Auntie!"
"Hey there!"
Xu Li noted that without them around, Anna and Eva naturally wouldn’t go against their husband's wishes. A mistake is a mistake; even if forgiven, things could never return to how they once were.
"This is Lao San," he said.
Zhuo Ya nodded at the Old Couple before returning to her mother’s side. Irina was tightly embraced by her mother and smiled sweetly at the Old Couple. She greeted them in her somewhat clumsy Mandarin, "Hello, Grandpa and Grandma!"
"Good, good!"
Kong Yan Hong looked at Irina and then back at Xu Li. "Who is this?"
"She’s Lao San's girlfriend."
Seeing her stunned expression as if she had never met Irina before, Xu Li awkwardly chuckled and patted Peter's back while ruffling Lisa's hair. "Old Peter, this is his girlfriend Lisa."
"Hello, Grandpa and Grandma!"
Peter and Lisa nodded and smiled at the Old Couple. Lisa had been learning Chinese from Peter for several years now; these simple greetings came easily to her. Kong Yan Hong looked around at Xu Li's children with delight before pulling Xu Lei—who had been chatting with Lao Si—over to Xu Li.
Xu Lei looked up and locked eyes with Xu Li for a long moment before finally lowering his head slightly and calling out, "Eldest Brother."
"Mm."
Xu Li nodded and took out some cigarettes, handing one to each of them. After lighting his own, he asked casually, "Is your rib okay?"
"It's nothing," Xu Lei said with a somewhat forced smile. "I can't blame you for my own loose tongue! It's sweltering outside in this summer heat; let's go inside and chat."
Xu Haigui ushered the whole family back into the house. As they stepped inside, the central air conditioning provided a refreshing relief. Kong Yan Hong was bustling around with a young woman, bringing them drinks and fruits. Xu Li brushed off some ash from his cigarette and asked, "Who is that girl?"
"That's my girlfriend, Wang Xinlin. She's also an artist from our company," Xu Lei replied, waving to his girlfriend and gesturing towards Xu Li and the others. "This is my older brother and his wife."
"Hello, big brother! Hello, sisters!"
