The next morning, he arrived at the gym and not long after, Zhuo Ya showed up in shorts and a tank top to practice her fighting techniques. As he lifted weights, he watched her and couldn't help but shake his head. "You’re too stiff with your movements."
With a loud thud, several hundred pounds of weights crashed onto the rubber mat. He walked over to the punching bag and pinched Zhuo Ya's cheek. "Remember, kid, you're training for self-defense, not for competitions, so you don't need to be so rigid."
As he spoke, he grabbed her wrist and tapped her fist with his right hand. "When you’re sparring with others, don’t be afraid of getting hurt. The more you fear pain, the quicker you’ll lose. You throw punches just like they do; it’s best to grab their wrist and use your fist to break their fingers. If you disable their hands, they’ll be like sheep, helpless as you take them down."
He shared his practical experience along with the techniques he learned from Andreev, breaking it down piece by piece for her. Zhuo Ya had a natural talent for fighting; as a child, she could chase after the older boys and beat them up, and later she had even dominated Old Liu in sparring matches.
"Thud! Thud!"
Her kicks needed to be fast and fierce, aiming to finish off the opponent in the shortest time possible. He held a pad against his side while Zhuo Ya kicked repeatedly, the pad making loud thuds with each strike. Once her kicking slowed down, he instructed her to switch to her left leg and continue until she was completely exhausted. Only then did they start cleaning up the gym.
Despite the large space and open windows, a faint smell of sweat lingered in the air. After he finished cleaning, Zhuo Ya jumped onto his back, allowing him to carry her back to the other room.
After breakfast, he took a stroll around the ranch. In the southeast corner, he spotted a flock of sheep that made him smile; with autumn approaching, these sheep would fetch a good price.
When he returned home, Eva was sitting in a chair, struggling to bend over to trim her toenails. He shook his head and approached her with a nail clipper. Lifting her into the sofa, he placed her feet on his lap and began trimming them carefully. "Couldn’t you wait for me to help you with this? With those two big bumps on your chest, it must be hard for you to bend your legs."
"Well, I figured I’d just do it myself since there wasn’t much else going on," she replied.
Eva looked at her husband’s scarred left cheek; her gaze softened as she thought about how well he treated her. She felt like the happiest woman in the world.
He planted a kiss on her left foot. "Let’s switch feet."
"Misha! I want to see our child," Eva said.
Xu Li paused for a moment. "Lao Si? Old Five?"
"It’s Peter," she replied with a pout. "That little rascal doesn’t even come home during break; he's off with Lisa and Uncle Andong at Dasha's house."
"Isn’t that good?" Xu Li chuckled. "He’s growing up now; he has his own circle of friends to maintain. You can’t keep him tied to your side forever, can you? When school starts again, we can visit him in Irkutsk."
"I’m preparing lunch now; Anna is taking Daria and the others shopping in Bratsk, so we won’t wait for them."
Just then, as Eva finished speaking, Zhuo Ya and Irina entered the living room and settled down. Zhuo Ya placed her big foot on Irina's lap like a little wife would do and began gently trimming Irina's nails while brushing back her hair.
Xu Li shook his head and got up from the kitchen.
