Anna opened the door and pushed Xu Li and Irina outside. Irina, frightened, shrank behind Xu Li, who wedged one foot in the doorframe. Before he could speak, Anna shot him a glare: "Hmm?"
Her long nasal tone carried an undeniable firmness. Xu Li opened his mouth but, under her cold gaze, withdrew his foot. As the door closed and locked behind them, sounds of scuffling and the sisters' scolding and cursing echoed from within. This was the first time they had truly lost their tempers; even when Zhuo Ya had secretly drunk before, they had only laughed it off.
"Just kill me! I've had enough of this life anyway!"
"What did you say? You've had enough? I think you're just tired of living!"
"Why shouldn't I have her?"
"What's the difference? That girl isn't even like you!"
Irina listened to Zhuo Ya's cries from inside and suddenly pressed her ear against the door, banging on it. "Auntie, don’t hit Zhuo Ya anymore! It’s all my fault! Please don’t hit her! I’ll leave right now! Please stop!"
Her pleas went unanswered as the scolding continued inside, followed by the sound of three people crying. Zhuo Ya sobbed while pleading for something, and Xu Li pulled the wailing Irina into the yard. They sat silently on the steps.
Xiong Da and a bear came running from the backyard. Irina, frightened, nestled into his embrace. Encouraged by him, she bravely reached out to touch the bear's head. "Uncle, can you take me back to Irkutsk? It’s because of me that Zhuo Ya got hit."
"This has nothing to do with you; your aunt isn’t blaming you."
He lit a cigarette and smoked quietly. A small creature suddenly darted out from somewhere, holding a plump wild rabbit in its mouth. Xu Li patted its large head and pointed at Irina in his arms. "From now on, she will also be your master, understand?"
Hearing this, the little creature rubbed its head against her arm. Xu Li held her hand gently while stroking its small head. They sat quietly at the door, waiting. After about an hour, a bruised Zhuo Ya came to the door, happily sitting on the threshold and tightly hugging fragrant Irina without letting go. "Mommy is here."
"I’ll cook you two eggs; you can use them for a hot compress. Look at what they did to you."
Feeling heartbroken, he stood up and headed straight for the kitchen. He didn’t dare face his wife right now, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t seek him out. The sisters came into the kitchen with red eyes, hitting and kicking him before finally snuggling into his arms and silently crying.
"I'm sorry for you both; I didn't mean to—"
Anna stood on tiptoe to block his words and after a long pause said, "This isn’t your fault. Who would have thought Misha at his age could still attract young girls?"
Eva was furious; she grabbed her husband’s hand and bit down hard but didn’t apply much force. Two shallow rows of bite marks appeared on his wrist. "Why do you drink so much when there’s no need?"
Xu Li grimaced as he explained, "I earned a million dollars for Ivan; he was so happy he insisted on drinking with me. I couldn’t stand not drinking after that. That old guy is generous; he called his son-in-law saying if anyone could get me drunk he'd split a million with them! When Valentin and the others came over, each brought a case of vodka! It was quite a scene!"
The sisters burst into laughter despite their earlier anger.
