"Is everyone in the car?"
As dawn broke, Xu Li carried Zhuo Ya downstairs. He glanced at the passenger bus parked in front of him; all the curtains were drawn, making it impossible to see inside. Ivan lit a cigarette for his brother-in-law and unconsciously glanced to the left. "Should we go take a look?"
"No need, there are only a few people."
Xu Li opened the car door and carefully placed his still-sleeping daughter in the back seat. Behind him, Ivan let out a long breath, driving his own vehicle ahead as Xu Li followed in his Mighty Chariot. While driving, he called Andreev, who had just woken up. "Our Village, can you count how many houses are unoccupied?"
Andreev, brushing his teeth, paused for a moment and replied somewhat unclearly, "Are people coming to our place again?"
"Yeah, about a dozen women. They can help with some small tasks."
Andreev frowned slightly. "Makarov, what we need are men for heavy labor. Why are you bringing so many women? Are they all your mistresses?"
"Shut up; I'm busy right now. I'll talk to you later. Just take a look first."
Xu Li flicked away the cigarette butt. "Have your wife bring some people to tidy up. Buy whatever is missing at the market and come back to me for reimbursement."
"Be careful on the road."
After hanging up, Xu Li focused on driving. Once his daughter woke up, he pulled over to the roadside, washed his face with mineral water, brushed his teeth for personal hygiene, and then continued on his way, quickly catching up with the passenger bus.
Screeching to a halt.
At lunchtime, the passenger bus stopped at a rest area where women of various heights and weights hurriedly got off to use the restroom. As Xu Li stepped out of the bus, his expression darkened. "Where are the fourteen or fifteen people we talked about?"
"Ivan, explain this to me."
He sat down in the co-driver's seat with a frown. Ivan forced a smile and said, "This is all Lekshev's doing; I'm just helping him out."
"Lekshev is getting promoted in the second half of the year. Why would he pull something like this now?"
Xu Li took a cigarette and lit it. Ivan slapped his thigh in frustration. "He wouldn't do it himself, but his mistress would! That foolish woman has been with him since Bratsk; later on, she somehow got into prison work and even became deputy warden."
"That woman is no pushover; she was involved in all sorts of shady dealings inside and eventually got reported. She approached Lekshev to help her clean up her mess, which exposed their previous relationship. Now do you understand?"
"You could have just told me directly instead of beating around the bush."
"Isn't it because I was afraid you wouldn't agree?"
Ivan exhaled two puffs of smoke through his nose. "These women are all alone; that bitch used ten-year-old prison wages to settle accounts with these released women. Those with families are all demanding compensation, but Lekshev has smoothed things over for them. The rest are just honest folks who were bullied in prison; under long-term pressure, they’re more docile than sheep."
