He tilted his head in thought, then pushed his bicycle along with Angelina toward his apartment. His uncle's house was crowded with children, and the apartment was small. Occasionally squeezing in was manageable, but he wasn't used to being cramped there every day. So, he rented an apartment with his older brother that was not far from school.
As they passed a bank, Xu Weixia withdrew one hundred thousand rubles and handed five thousand to Angelina. "See? My buddy has money."
"Look at you showing off," she replied.
The young girl tucked the money into her pocket and followed him into a supermarket, where they bought groceries and some snacks. At the checkout, Xu Weixia organized his loose change and pulled out a handful of coins from his backpack, stuffing the newly purchased red envelopes into his pocket.
When they passed a donation box, he dropped the bulging red envelopes inside and happily carried their purchases out. Angelina quietly observed this.
"I didn't expect you two to keep your apartment so clean," she remarked.
Wearing disposable slippers, Angelina surveyed the small but tidy apartment. Xu Weixia raised his chin proudly. "Well, if I really end up dating an oligarch's daughter someday, I need to have something to show for myself. This is just the beginning. Today, I'll let you see my cooking skills."
He patted the young girl's shoulder and headed to the kitchen with the ingredients. Soon, he returned to the living room with some washed vegetables and placed them on the coffee table. "These are fresh and full of the patience of grandmothers; you can't find anything this delicious in a supermarket."
"It's just cucumbers and tomatoes. Look at you being so stingy," Angelina scoffed.
Ignoring her, Xu Weixia shrugged and busied himself in the kitchen. Before long, rhythmic chopping sounds filled the air. Curious, she walked over to see him skillfully handling a strange-looking knife as he prepared potatoes.
His fluid movements left her mesmerized; three small potatoes quickly transformed into a large plate of shredded potatoes. She asked in surprise, "Why go through all that trouble? Are you planning to make potato dumplings?"
"You haven't seen anything yet; soon you'll learn what sweet and sour shredded potatoes are all about," Xu Weixia replied proudly as he continued chopping bell peppers while occasionally lifting the pot lid to stir the simmering beef.
Angelina leaned against the cabinet watching him while munching on potato chips. After a while, she smacked her lips and asked, "Do you have something to drink? I'm thirsty."
"Help yourself in the fridge," he replied.
The young girl opened the fridge, which was neatly stocked with small boxes. She picked up a small plastic jar and asked, "What's this?"
"Wahaha calcium milk—it's sweet and delicious."
"And this big-eyed tin can?"
"Wang Wang Milk—it's creamy and very sweet."
"What about this one?"
"That's coconut milk; drinking it regularly will make you a real man."
"And this one?"
"That’s turtle jelly; I doubt you'll like it."
The two of them engaged in a lively question-and-answer session, which was far from boring. Angelina, feeling a bit greedy or perhaps just curious, wanted to try a little bit of everything. She took a few sips from one drink, then slurped another, leaving the remnants on the cabinet.
These Moscow treats were hard to come by and were delivered right to their door. "Don't waste them!" she exclaimed.
Xu Weixia casually picked up a bottle of Wang Wang Milk, cooking while taking big gulps. After finishing, she smacked her lips and said, "Coconut Milk is still the best."
