The little girl glanced at Eva, her demeanor and actions clearly not those of an adult. She seemed to understand Xu Li's subtle implication, nodded, and fell silent, her movements becoming gentler.
They didn’t mind me, this poor boy; I would cherish and protect them in my heart. Xu Li looked around at the thoughtful little girls and smiled. “Whether you’re a boy or a girl, it’s all the same. When happiness knocks on your door, you must seize the opportunity and not leave yourself with regrets. The girl who had just spoken burst into laughter, and the others followed suit, their lips curling into smiles. Xu Li took a few red envelopes from his pocket and handed one to each of them. “When I married their mother, there was no ceremony and no family present. This time, I want to make it up to them. According to our Chinese tradition, here’s a red envelope for you all to share in the joy.”
“Thank you, sir!” The little girls happily accepted the red envelopes, opened them for a quick glance, and immediately tucked them away with beaming smiles, becoming even more enthusiastic in their preparations.
Xu Li smiled slightly and moved to the resting area while calling his brother-in-law. “If Boyka can make it, what about Old Liu? What did he say?”
As Ivan was selecting formal wear, he frowned. “That guy is too proud; he doesn’t want us to laugh at him for not coming. He refuses to show up no matter what but has sent a gift instead. It should be arriving soon.”
Xu Li clicked his tongue. “What about our parents?”
“They're picking out formal wear too; we’ll head over early this evening.”
“Alright, I’ll hang up for now.” He put his phone away and leaned back against the sofa, closing his eyes to rest. To celebrate the sisters’ thirtieth birthday, even the eldest and second eldest from Moscow had flown in along with Lao Si from faraway China.
The flower girl would be his daughter, but since one daughter wasn’t enough, he had pulled a few from among his ten nieces. The birthday celebration would take place in the evening due to their family’s special circumstances; it wouldn’t be good if outsiders found out.
“Misha, what do you think?”
Eva approached him in a light pink long dress adorned with a silver tiara studded with diamonds, wobbling slightly in her small high heels as she lifted her skirt and spun around slowly. Just as she was showing off her twirl, she lost her balance and was caught by Xu Li.
“Are you okay?”
Eva pouted as Xu Li helped her sit down on the sofa and pointed to her right foot. “It hurts.”
“Let me take a look.” He knelt down to remove her high heel carefully and examined her delicate foot before kissing it gently. “You’re fine; let me massage it for you.”
Seeing her husband tenderly rubbing her foot with a pained expression made Eva smile with happiness. A little girl pulled out her newly bought Huawei phone and began taking pictures from various angles. This simple love was exactly what she longed for.
