"What about the tiger?" Xu Li suddenly asked. Old Russian rolled his eyes, "What do you need a gun for?"
"Fair enough," he nodded and started eating. Eva pouted as she came into the living room, shaking his shoulder, "Misha, I want strawberries, I want watermelon, I want grapes, I want lots and lots of fruit."
"Alright, alright, I'll go to Bratsk and buy some for you."
"You’re so nice!" Eva kissed him on the cheek and happily returned to her bedroom. Xu Li and his father-in-law enjoyed their meal and drinks, and the evening passed slowly.
In the following days, the pace of land clearing sped up significantly. Several cutting machines were nearly smoking, which made the supervisor feel a pang of regret. Xu Li slipped a stack of cash into his pocket, and he no longer felt sorry about it; after all, the machines belonged to the company.
"Moo."
"Cluck cluck."
Xu Li rode on his father-in-law's favorite Black Horse, galloping across his own ranch while inspecting the herd of cattle grazing with their heads down. He felt an indescribable sense of satisfaction. The ranch over at his father-in-law's place sold calves around a year old. He believed that bigger cows were worth more, so he planned to wait until they all grew larger before selling them in one batch to recoup his investment.
The summer evening breeze felt particularly pleasant against his bare skin. After inspecting the ranch, he returned to the small courtyard where ten breeding cows and over twenty heifers had significantly lightened his wallet. The grass-cutting and packaging machinery had also been shipped from Huaxia a couple of days ago, which had caused him quite a bit of heartache regarding costs.
"Come here for a hug, Dad."
He took the chubby little ball from his mother-in-law's arms and kissed her round face repeatedly. His father-in-law shouted from the yard, "Time for barbecue!"
His mother-in-law began serving dishes; she had been doing less work lately, spending her days at home with her daughter and grandchildren while preparing meals for the family—simple yet fulfilling.
"When are you two having another child?" His mother-in-law asked while eating barbecue. Xu Li blinked in confusion, "Mom, aren’t two Xiao Pi Monkeys enough for you to handle?"
"You don’t understand; here we believe that more children are better. If they get bullied later on, they’ll have helpers."
Natasha cheerfully handed a chicken leg to Misha beside her, "You should take advantage of being young while you can; there are state subsidies for having more kids."
"But my child has Huaxia citizenship; we haven’t opened up the two-child policy there, and it’s not easy to register."
"How about we register them here?" Andrei suggested. Xu Li thought for a moment but shook his head: "I’m afraid that if war breaks out, our children will have to go fight too."
The old couple fell silent for a moment before realizing that with Da Mao and Er Mao’s relationship, it was only a matter of time before things escalated. They decided not to dwell on it any longer and changed the topic while continuing to eat. Xu Weixia, this little guy, straddled Eva's lap and kicked out with his chubby feet, sending Xiong Da tumbling over beside them.
Little Brat adjusted her position, holding a dirt-covered chicken leg, casting a pitiful glance at the giggling Xu Weixia. She shifted her bottom and continued eating. Xu Li stood up and went to the Apple Tree to pick two half-ripe apples. Taking a bite, he found them woody and lacking in juice, but handed them to the two Mishas before picking up a wine glass and chatting with Father-in-law.
Feeling full and satisfied, he held a cigarette while conversing with Father-in-law. The two Mishas hugged their apples, munching on them as they circled around on the ground. Anna and Eva, concerned about mosquitoes biting the children, returned to the house early to give them a bath.
