"Just hold on, it will be over soon."
The nurse carefully tore the bandages off Xu Li, revealing a network of scars that made Vasily's eyelids twitch. Sophia took one look and quickly left the room; it was simply too horrifying.
After a long time spent changing his dressings and applying medication, the nurse carried a basin of used bandages out of the ward. Only then did Sophia enter, smiling at Xu Li, who had one eye exposed. "Misha just called me; you're going to be a father."
Xu Li's single eye widened in shock. He attempted to sit up but collapsed back down as blood began to seep through the bandages on his abdomen. Alarmed, Sophia turned to find a doctor. Before long, unfortunate Xu Li was back on the operating table, as a small section of his stitches had burst.
Having spent nearly a month in the hospital, Xu Li was finally discharged. The doctors remarked on his strong recovery; at this rate, he would likely be fully healed in two months. This impressed both Xu Li and Dao Yi.
Looking in the mirror, he saw that his hair had been cut into a buzz cut. Dark scars ran from his forehead down to his chin, and his left cheek was almost divided into sections. His ear had been stitched several times and appeared slightly crooked. Even he felt uneasy looking at his reflection; how had he dared to face that starving brown bear?
"Misha, you've grown taller again," Sophia said as she helped Xu Li out of Wei Jian's office. She stood on her tiptoes to help him into a thick down jacket, zipping it up while teasing him, "You young men grow just as fast as girls do."
"Thank you, Sister Sophia."
They embraced briefly before parting ways. Vasily cheerfully picked up a package. "Let's go! Mom and Dad are home and have prepared a feast for our great hero."
"Okay."
As soon as they stepped out of the hospital building, Xu Li couldn't help but shiver; the cold wind mixed with snowflakes stung his face. The three quickly got into the car, waiting for the heater to warm up before heading toward the countryside.
Fortunately, it had only snowed during this time and not rained much; the dirt roads were frozen solid, making for a much smoother ride than before. They left the hospital in the morning and arrived home around four in the afternoon. Andrei and Natasha heard the dog barking and knew they were back.
"Mom!"
As soon as Xu Li got out of the car, he rushed to embrace Natasha, who was walking toward him. She gently touched the scars on his face, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Come inside quickly; don’t freeze out here."
"Okay."
He released Natasha and hugged Andrei before entering the living room. The two sisters had been eagerly waiting for Xu Li's return, their cheerful smiles fading as they saw his disfigured face; they instinctively shrank back in fear.
Xu Li didn’t mind; even he felt scared looking at his own face now. It was no wonder that the twins were apprehensive. They sat across from him on the sofa, stealing glances at him from time to time.
Sophia handed them some snacks she had brought back and then led them to the bedroom. Soon after, Pushkin's family was among the first to arrive. Old Russian opened his arms wide and gently embraced Xu Li, patting him on the back. "Brave young man! I told you you'd be fine! Hahaha! Now Natasha can rest easy."
"Thank you, Uncle Pushkin."
After releasing Pushkin, he hugged Aunt Nastya and Valery in turn. Following them were Popov, Old Couple, and Yurian; soon enough, the house was filled with relatives standing or sitting everywhere.
In the evening, everyone gathered cheerfully for dinner. Although space was limited and some people didn't get a seat at the table, they didn't mind. It was nice for everyone to come together, holding their plates, eating and chatting. After all, during the long winter, most of their time was spent like old couples, huddled in their own homes.
