He then took Eva's hand and went to find Anna. In a large wooden barn diagonally across from them, Old Andrei let out a cold snort, tucked the local specialties under his arm, and lit a cigarette. He was still young but already had a rough demeanor.
Behind him were two large objects, completely covered by camouflage cloth. On the west side of the barn, there was a row of wooden shelves filled with various tools, and beneath the shelves lay dozens of military-green wooden boxes. Andrei leaned the local specialties against the shelf and took out a dark rag, wiping each tool while humming "Alliance Unbreakable."
Xu Li brought the two sisters back to the house. Once they sat on the sofa, he didn’t know what to do. He scratched his head and asked, "Where's Aunt Natasha? Wasn't she just in the house?"
Anna lay on the sofa, propping her feet on Xu Li's lap. "Mom went to feed the pigs and cows; she probably won't be back until afternoon. If you're hungry, I can call Dad to make you something. You’re really good-looking, unlike my dad and brother; their faces are all hairy and ugly."
"Yeah, Dad makes good barbecue," Xu Li replied.
Eva nodded in agreement. Xu Li grabbed Anna's feet and noticed her toenails were a bit long. He stood up and went into the room, quickly rummaging through the drawer of the bedside table until he found a nail clipper and an ear scoop.
He first cleaned her ears and then slowly trimmed her toenails. When Andrei locked the big barn door and returned to the house, he saw Xu Li giving Eva a manicure. Andrei glanced at them before heading to the kitchen.
The lunch table felt somewhat dull as the four of them ate their meals in silence. Xu Li wanted to strike up a conversation with Andrei, but he was too focused on eating. At most, he would cut some smoked sausage for them three along with Xun Yu.
"Uh, Uncle..." Xu Li tried to get his attention.
Andrei ignored him, continuing to cut Xun Yu while munching on Sour Cucumber and Lava. Xu Li scratched his nose, feeling a bit awkward before finally saying, "Dad?"
"What?"
The old man put down his Lava and Sour Cucumber, wiped his mouth, and looked at Xu Li with surprise. It seemed like he was taken aback by this sudden address.
"Is Aunt Natasha not coming back for lunch?"
"She took Lava and Borscht with her; just eat your food."
"Oh."
Andrei gave him a meaningful glance before returning to his meal. "This afternoon I'm going to the ranch to slaughter a cow; you should eat more meat. You're so thin that a gust of wind could blow you away."
Xu Li looked at his skinny arms that resembled sticks and then at his father-in-law’s arms that were hardly thicker than his thighs. He realized Andrei had a point; he couldn’t even lift his wife properly. What if something unexpected happened? He would be in trouble!
He nodded just as he stuffed some Lava into his mouth when he noticed his father-in-law staring at him. He blinked and added, "I know, Dad."
"Yeah, eat up."
Andrei nodded in satisfaction, tossing some Xun Yu into his mouth before wiping his lips. "I have to go work at the ranch now. If you get bored this afternoon, just watch TV at home or play games with Anna and Eva."
In the room, there was a gaming console. Meyerwa's sister-in-law had brought a lot of fruits and drinks yesterday, all stored in the fridge. Feel free to help yourself, but don't wander off; this place is quite remote, and there are wild boars and wolf packs around.
After saying this, he stood up and patted Xu Li on the shoulder before getting back to his tasks.
