Zhang Cuifang chuckled, feeling increasingly strange inside. She glanced at her calm brother, Zhang Gaoshan, and then at her eager nephew, Zhang Feng. She thought to herself that if she weren't sitting far from Zhang Feng, he would probably have already reached over with his chopsticks.
What are they really after?
Zhang Cuifang wasn't foolish; as she pondered, it suddenly dawned on her that it might have something to do with her son, Chen Xuan.
"Chen Xuan," Zhang Cuifang casually asked, "what were you chatting about with your uncle just now? You seemed so happy."
"Nothing much," Chen Xuan replied without elaborating. He picked up a piece of tomato and smiled lightly, "Uncle is planning to open a shopping mall in the second half of the year and hopes I can supply some agricultural products by then."
"That sounds great! Your uncle definitely won't treat you poorly," Zhang Cuifang exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. She was unaware of Chen Xuan's current situation with the farm and mistakenly thought that Zhang Gaoshan was planning to promote him, which made her quite pleased.
Seeing this, Zhang Gaoshan also smiled and said, "Don't worry, Zhang Cuifang. I wouldn't treat anyone poorly, especially not Chen Xuan! Hahaha!"
Zhang Feng chuckled in agreement, and only then did a satisfied smile appear on Zhang Cuifang's face.
However, Chen Xuan frowned slightly.
At this frown, Zhang Gaoshan's heart suddenly tightened. His laughter came to an abrupt halt as he asked nervously, "Chen Xuan, what's wrong?"
"Nothing," Chen Xuan shook his head, thinking that his uncle was being overly sensitive; he had merely furrowed his brow for a moment, yet it made Zhang Gaoshan anxious.
Muttering to himself, Chen Xuan picked out the tomato from his bowl and complained, "This tomato tastes strange. It looks good but doesn't have the flavor it used to have when I was a kid."
"Well," Zhang Cuifang replied casually, "these days tomatoes are bred for long-distance transport. Many are picked while still green; they’re hard and not very tasty. Just make do with them."
Chen Xuan paused at her words. Back when times were tough, his mother, Zhang Cuifang, loved making scrambled eggs with tomatoes for him. She herself also enjoyed eating tomatoes very much.
Little did he expect that it had only been a short while, and the texture of the tomatoes had changed so much.
Chen Xuan suddenly had a thought and smiled, "If they don't taste good, I won't buy them. I'll just grow my own."
"Grow your own?" Zhang Cuifang glanced at Chen Xuan, feeling pleased, but replied, "Just don't plant too many, or it might affect your farm's income."
"Got it," Chen Xuan nodded.
A simple home-cooked meal was quickly finished.
Zhang Gaoshan sat for a while longer, sipping tea before getting up to leave Chen Family Village.
Before he left, Zhang Gaoshan looked at Chen Xuan with reluctance. Taking advantage of Zhang Cuifang's distraction, he whispered, "Chen Xuan, my supermarket will definitely open in the second half of the year. Make sure to supply me with goods then."
"Don't worry, Uncle. I won't let you down."
"That's good." Zhang Gaoshan sighed in relief and smiled contentedly.
With a beaming smile, Zhang Gaoshan started his car and patiently waited for the conversation on the other side to conclude.
Meanwhile, Zhang Feng was chatting with Dong Li, both wearing broad smiles as they exchanged pleasantries with Zhang Cuifang, looking quite reluctant to leave.
Especially Dong Li, who wore a sorrowful expression of reluctance. If outsiders saw them, they might think it was a daughter returning to her mother's home with her mother seeing her off for miles.
After some small talk, the couple reluctantly got into their car while Zhang Cuifang waved them off until they disappeared from view.
"Son," as soon as Zhang Gaoshan's family left, Zhang Cuifang's smile faded. She murmured, "What was going on with your uncle's family just now? Why do I feel like they were asking something from me?"
"Are you hiding something from me?"
"Ha!" Chen Xuan chuckled, "It's probably just that your uncle hasn't seen you in a long time."
"That's nonsense!" Zhang Cuifang sneered. "I know exactly what my brother is like. He has always looked down on your father; why would he think any better of you?"
"He's definitely got his eye on you, so be careful."
Chen Xuan nodded silently.
"But," Zhang Cuifang suddenly smiled with satisfaction, her expression brightening, "this feeling of being praised by someone is really nice. I never expected your uncle would treat me this way!"
"Hmph! It’s worth all the effort I’ve put in over the years to raise you."
Under the sunlight, a genuine joy appeared on Zhang Cuifang's face for the first time, her hair slightly graying at the temples.
Chen Xuan felt a sudden sting in his eyes.
