"I don't need it." Lin Nuan Nuan shook her head. "I don't want to drag anyone down with me."
Ji Mingyu was about to speak when the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open.
Huo Jing Shen walked in with a dark expression. Upon seeing the two alone together, his gaze turned even colder. "Well, I was wondering why you haven't been responding to my messages."
Lin Nuan Nuan instinctively covered her chest, where a dull pain began to throb again.
"President Huo, the patient needs to rest," Ji Mingyu interjected, positioning himself in front of Lin Nuan Nuan's bed.
Huo Jing Shen sneered. "Doctor Ji is teaching me how to treat my fiancée?"
"Former fiancée," Lin Nuan Nuan corrected softly. "Aren't you about to get engaged to Su Jin?"
"So you go and flirt with another man?" Huo Jing Shen stepped closer to the bed, looking down at her. "Lin Nuan Nuan, you really know how to embarrass me."
Ji Mingyu could no longer hold back. "Huo Jing Shen!"
"Doctor Ji." Lin Nuan Nuan tugged at Ji Mingyu's sleeve. "Could you please step outside for a moment?"
Ji Mingyu glanced at her with concern but eventually nodded. "I'll be right outside."
Once Ji Mingyu left, Huo Jing Shen immediately seized Lin Nuan Nuan's wrist. "Tell me, what is your relationship with him?"
"Let go." Lin Nuan Nuan struggled against his grip. "You're hurting me."
"Hurting?" Huo Jing Shen laughed coldly. "Now you know what pain feels like? With so many people watching at the banquet, weren't you afraid of embarrassing yourself?"
Lin Nuan Nuan stopped struggling and met his gaze directly. "Are you more concerned about me embarrassing you or about me exposing your true self?"
Huo Jing Shen was taken aback.
At that moment, the ECG alarm suddenly blared.
Lin Nuan Nuan's face turned pale as she gasped for breath.
She pushed Huo Jing Shen's hand away. "Get lost..."
"You..."
"Get lost!"
Ji Mingyu rushed in and, upon seeing Lin Nuan Nuan's condition, immediately pressed the call button.
"Prepare the adrenaline right away!" he shouted to the nurses who entered.
Huo Jing Shen stood frozen, watching the medical staff move around in a flurry.
For the first time, he realized that Lin Nuan Nuan had become nothing but skin and bones.
When did she... become like this?
"President Huo, please step outside," a nurse urged as she pushed him toward the door.
Just before he left, he heard Ji Mingyu's voice: "Rapid heartbeat, blood pressure continuing to drop..."
Huo Jing Shen stood in the corridor, lighting a cigarette.
Su Jin appeared out of nowhere. Seeing his anxious demeanor, a shadow flickered in her eyes.
"Jing Shen, Sister Nuan Nuan..."
"Do you know she's sick?" Huo Jing Shen suddenly asked.
Su Jin was taken aback and quickly shook her head. "I didn't know. What illness does she have?"
Huo Jing Shen remained silent, his gaze fixed on the operating room door.
"Jing Shen..." Su Jin grasped his hand. "Don't worry, Sister Nuan Nuan will be fine."
"However..." She bit her lip, "Do you think she might be pretending? After all, she has always..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the operating room door swung open.
Ji Mingyu stepped out and, upon seeing Huo Jing Shen, coldly stated, "She is temporarily stable."
"What exactly happened to her?"
Ji Mingyu glanced at Su Jin but remained silent.
Huo Jing Shen waved for Su Jin to leave before asking again, "What is wrong with her heart?"
Ji Mingyu sneered, "Now you care?"
"You..."
"Huo Jing Shen, do you even deserve to care?"
"What did you say?" Huo Jing Shen narrowed his eyes.
Ji Mingyu stood his ground, "I asked if you deserve it."
"Do you know her heart function is down to twenty percent? Do you know she could collapse at any moment?"
"Do you even realize that while you were preparing to get engaged to another woman, she barely has any time left to live?"
Huo Jing Shen's face turned pale. "What are you talking about…"
"What am I talking about?" Ji Mingyu pulled a medical report from his pocket and threw it at him. "Look for yourself!"
Huo Jing Shen trembled as he opened the report.
The shocking data nearly took his breath away.
"It can't be..." he murmured, "She seemed perfectly fine..."
Ji Mingyu let out a cold laugh. "Is everything really fine?"
"Do you think the medicine she takes every day is just vitamins? Do you think she’s always clutching her chest for show?"
"Huo Jing Shen, do you truly care?"
Huo Jing Shen staggered back a step.
He recalled Lin Nuan Nuan's pale face and her increasingly emaciated figure.
So it turned out… she was really sick.
And he had only focused on believing Su Jin’s words, thinking she was trying to seduce other men.
He even insisted she attend his engagement party…
"How long does she have?" Huo Jing Shen asked hoarsely.
"Three months," Ji Mingyu replied, "if she doesn’t have the surgery."
"Then let’s do the surgery!"
"She refused."
"Why?"
Ji Mingyu looked at him and said each word clearly, "Because she feels that no one cares whether she lives or dies."
