Early the next morning in K City
In the pale sky, one can still faintly see the moon from last night when looking up. Students are seen everywhere on the streets heading to school. The breakfast shop across from the supermarket is crowded with sleepy people, and the warm aroma wafts out from the shop, carried away by the clear sunlight, much like a mother's tenderness, scattering in this just-awakened city.
People follow the clock chime of seven in the morning, step by step, making their way to their work and study places.
"Auntie, I want two buns, one with meat filling and one with red bean paste!"
The crowd turned to look, and a child wearing a red scarf parked his bicycle on the sidewalk and shouted at the woman at the Baozi shop. Even though many people were waiting for their breakfast, no one felt annoyed by the sudden "cutting in line" by the child.
"Okay, wait a moment. Three yuan!" The woman, busy as she was, looked up, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and smiled in response.
"Uh, I'll have another pack of soy milk!"
"Sure!"
In stark contrast to the bustling breakfast shop, at this hour, the supermarket across the city road had only a few scattered pedestrians passing by, and no one paid attention to the woman sitting on the steps in front of the store. She gazed at the breakfast shop across the street, as if reminiscing about something. This seemingly ordinary little shop appeared to her as an extraordinarily sacred place, radiating a celestial glow. A car sped by, and she tried to look again, but it was once more engulfed in a terrifying shade of deep red. The reason for her wandering suddenly became clear again, and the guilt that had long accompanied her made her lower her head in shame, abandoning her desire to cross the street and buy some buns.
Five minutes later, the child got his breakfast as he wished. After riding his bike across the street, he couldn't wait to open the cap of the soy milk bag. However, the cap was too tight and he couldn't open it no matter how hard he tried. Just as he was worrying about the soy milk, a greeting suddenly came from behind the child: "Can I help you?" "Huh?" The child turned around curiously to see a young woman wearing a mask and a sun hat standing behind him. In the instant when the child and the woman made eye contact, the woman even lowered her head as if she had made a mistake.
"Haha, thank you, big sister!" The child was very naive and without thinking, handed the soy milk to the ragged and thin woman in front of him. The woman's arms did not match her slender figure at all. When she moved her wrist slightly, the muscles covered by her drooping clothes suddenly bulged. The lid almost flew off, but luckily the woman reacted quickly and caught it. "Here," the woman handed the soy milk back to the child.
The child said "thank you," but their eyes looked towards the woman's wrist on the sleeve of her clothes. The woman noticed and awkwardly pulled at the sleeve of that hand.
"Big sister, what's on your wrist? Is it a watch? It's so big," the child asked.
"Um, yes," the woman smiled bitterly and turned away. She looked back with a glimmer of hope, only to find the child still standing there, staring blankly at her. The woman waved at him and gradually started running. Meanwhile, on the outdoor screen of the supermarket building behind her, the morning news was still being broadcast:
"According to today's news, the police have further reported that the murder case at the breakfast shop from two years ago will be unconditionally closed, which means that the suspect Lu Sha will continue to hide in society. Many experts and members of the public have expressed strong dissatisfaction with this decision, but some believe that the killer Lu Sha grew up in an orphanage, which was attacked by the 'Viper' gang back then. This raises the possibility that she may suffer from severe mental disorders that prevent her from being convicted..."
Lu Sha had merely passed through this area by chance. When she saw the school behind the supermarket, she was reminded of the orphanage where she had grown up and its director, Lu Weifeng. Gathering her courage, Lu Sha walked toward the bustling school entrance in the early morning and encountered a boy who was facing a small problem on the way.
Perhaps in Lu Sha's eyes, children were the only beings that allowed her to see the purity of the world. She genuinely loved these kids from the bottom of her heart, but she was afraid to go to crowded places; today was one of those rare occasions. Lu Sha still felt she had taken a risk; she thought that the boy must have seen the chain spear launcher on her wrist and recognized her.
"Hurry and run, leave this city." Lu Sha thought.
She had been in this city for two weeks, which was already a long time for her.
For the past two years, Lu Sha had been wandering around, wearing a tattered Sun hat regardless of the season, roaming all over the country. Wherever there was a garbage dump, there was Lu Sha's shadow - she dared not work, and the thing that made her happiest every day was rummaging through the leftovers in the garbage, because that way she had something to eat.
She has been wanted by the national police for her escape, which has only worsened her already bleak life. Fortunately, Sister Jiao An always knows where to find her. Whenever Lu Sha feels she can't go on, Jiao An appears in unexpected places, providing her with both material and spiritual support. Jiao An has told Lu Sha more than once that as long as she agrees, he can immediately rent her the best house. However, Lu Sha never desires such things. In the face of Jiao An's help, she chooses to take only what she needs and willingly continues her wandering. In Lu Sha's eyes, she is certainly grateful for everything Sister Jiao An has done for her, but if she were to rely entirely on Jiao An to survive, it would weigh heavily on her conscience. Moreover, she would feel inferior; this sense of humility is something Lu Sha can no longer bear.
In the past two years, Lu Sha has rarely had a peaceful night's sleep. She either wakes up in the middle of the night from dreams of escape or lies awake thinking about how to flee next. With meals often missed and one escape after another, this way of life seems endless. Lu Sha has seen the world's malice towards her, and she has had enough. Today, she must return to the paradise she longs for.
Unknowingly, noon has arrived.
Behind the volunteer tent by the highway, Lu Sha was hiding from people, using the tent to temporarily escape the blazing sunlight. She pressed her head down and wiped away some sweat, ensuring no one was watching her before she dashed towards the toll station ahead. By the time the volunteers lifted their Sun hats to look at Lu Sha's back, she had already attracted little attention.
"Just three more kilometers..."
Lu Sha gazed at the distance to the provincial road and sighed lightly, "My feet hurt so much..."
She can walk into the woods and cross the expressway toll station, and then walk along the emergency lane. Although this will be very tiring, Lu Sha has done this many times before.
For survival, this is also an unavoidable method.
Usually, Lu Sha doesn't have a city she really wants to go to, but this time is different. This time, the place she wants to go is not far, and it has a strong attraction for her. In Lu Sha's eyes now, that is paradise. This is a good thing for her.
When she was still in primary school, President Lu Weifeng once held her in his arms and pointed to the moon, asking her, "Sasa, do you know there is a sister named Chang'e on the moon?"
"Yes."
"Do you know about the brother Hou Yi?"
"Mm."
"Do you know why two people can still love each other for eternity even when they are far apart in different galaxies?"
"I don't know."
"Because, in this vast universe, the most romantic thing is not eternity. Unchanging constancy only makes beauty gradually age. What truly remains beautiful and romantic is the reunion."
Under the bright sun, Lu Sha walked briskly, following the hand of her former foster father Lao Lu, looking up at the night sky.
"You see, these stars, they have always been waiting. As long as the two who love each other give the word, the Milky Way will be their bridge."
She no longer knew what it felt like to be in love, but Lu Sha still longed for the most romantic things to happen to her. She wished to keep the one beautiful thing she possessed forever in her hands. It didn't matter who the other person was; kindness towards her was enough.
Lu Sha silently tucked her hands into her pockets. Although her feet hurt, she forced herself to walk quickly. The cars around her roared past at the toll booth, honking their horns, as if they were the real humans and Lu Sha was just an unnecessary little creature.
The autumn flu in this city is particularly severe, so a health monitoring point is set up at each station. People in small cars just need to show their faces, but for large vehicles, especially buses, it's more complicated. Everyone has to get off the bus and undergo a check one by one. In the distance, a yellow bus is parked on the side of the road, and the people on the bus are queuing up for the check. Lu Sha tilts his head to one side, looking at them curiously. A throbbing pain in the soles of her feet seems to be constantly reminding her of what she should do. Drive the car away?
Although she has driven a supercar with a continuously variable transmission, this doesn't seem right... and she doesn't have the opportunity anyway.
But as she stared at the roof of the car, a bold idea suddenly came to her.
"Tourists who have finished the inspection, please get on the bus! We will be departing soon!" the tour guide called out at the door.
The tourists got on the car one after another. The tour guide glanced back at the people on the car, thinking about how to explain the next stop. Suddenly, the whole car swayed to one side, followed by a "thud" sound. "What's going on?" The tour guide walked around to the other side of the car. It was too sunny on this side, and the tourists in the back seat had already pulled up the curtains, so they didn't notice anything unusual about the car. The tour guide looked up and down the car, muttering, "There's nothing here."
But he didn't notice the mark left by a hook on the roof of the car.
Lu Sha lay on the scorching hot roof, her back and buttocks burning so much that Lu Sha wanted to scream. She listened to the tour guide calling for everyone to get on the bus and went to the other side. It wasn't until the car started that Lu Sha let out a long sigh, as if releasing all the pent-up agony.
The car drove onto the highway, and Lu Sha turned over, using Chain spear to hold herself in place. The wind blew fiercely all the way, making her jacket feel like it was about to be torn apart by the wind. Lu Sha was so blown by the wind that she couldn't even open her eyes.
The journey was incredibly painful for Lu Sha; her saliva felt like it was about to dry up. Fortunately, she had pressed her hat down against her body, or else the wind would have likely snatched it away. Lu Sha felt as if her red hair was about to be blown away! The illusion compelled her to raise her hand to touch her hair, but her Chain Spear was hanging by the tail of the vehicle, making it impossible to move. "Well, becoming a nun wouldn't be so bad; no one would recognize me," Lu Sha thought to herself with self-deprecation.
After more than an hour of travel, the bus chose to stop at a service area. Lu Sha retrieved her Chain Spear like a released prisoner, flipped over, and lay on the roof of the bus, gasping for air. Anyone unaware might have thought she had just surfaced after holding her breath underwater for an hour.
However, just at that moment, a woman who had just come out of the restroom spotted Lu Sha. She pointed at the top of the car and started talking to the person next to her.
"Oh no!" Lu Sha exclaimed in shock, quickly rolling off the car. The physical skills she had developed during her time with the Viper Organization manifested instinctively, like a knee-jerk reaction. Lu Sha hurriedly performed a roll upon landing and immediately got up to run, her Sun hat falling off in the process, causing her vibrant red hair to cascade down like a cherry blossom waterfall.
The tourists preparing to get into their cars were taken aback when they saw someone fall from the sky. Soon, someone spotted Lu Sha's red hair and shouted out:
"It's the murderer!"
The people nearby reacted as if they were boiling water, with a wave of fear and shock engulfing everyone.
"Call the police! She's trying to escape!"
Someone has already dialed 110.
Lu Sha dared not look back, just panting heavily, running wildly. She just wanted to run, to a place where no one knew her, without panic, without despair, without hunger, without everything she had experienced.
City A, 46 kilometers away.
The road sign in front of her displayed the following information. "So far away..." Lu Sha glanced at it and finally dared to look back. It seemed like she had already run about two or three kilometers in about five minutes. Lu Sha calculated the time, and the nearest city was not far from here. If the police were to come, it would probably take... about half an hour to get here. Without hesitation, Lu Sha stealthily slipped into the field of bushes by the highway, repeating her well-practiced "escape plan."
Her estimation was not wrong; about forty minutes later, three police cars rushed to the scene. Upon receiving the report, the police immediately requested all witnesses not to leave.
The people at the scene quickly gathered around, describing how Lu Sha had fled. The Director of the City Police Department surprisingly poked his head out of the car, opened the door, and walked up to the crowd:
"Thank you all for your information. We are heading out now and will definitely bring that murderer to justice."
"How did the Director end up here?" Of course, no one here recognized this Director, but from his attire and the badge on his chest, it was clear that he was different from the regular police officers.
"Please rest assured, we will carry out our mission immediately and won't waste your time."
The Director interrupted those in the crowd who still wanted to say something. The crowd was too agitated, and listening to unnecessary information was just wasting both sides' time, something the Director was well aware of.
The police car immediately started and hit the road. Along the way, the Director looked at the messages on the tablet in hand and the file information on Lu Sha, letting out a long sigh. Gazing out at the scenery, he spoke to himself, which was also meant for the officers in the car:
"The mission has changed, completely changed. It's no longer about capturing Lu Sha; it's about helping the M City Military Base find her."
"Although she is guilty, she can indeed be said to have atoned for her sins. This girl is so pitiful; the prejudices of the world owe her a normal life. In her position, I am powerless to help..."
The Director turned his gaze from the scenery back to his secretary. "I heard that the M City Military Base is searching for two individuals nationwide, and Lu Sha is one of them. Do you remember the war in City S two years ago? It is about to begin again."
The Director's deep eyes were as profound as outer space, yet filled with dense points of light, as if they represented the future of this planet.
