After docking the boat, I invited Kong Yunfei on board. It was a chance encounter in the vast ocean, so I felt it was only right to extend a warm welcome!
"Hey, Feige, wasn't it your friend who invited you out for fishing? Where is he? Bring him along! I'll treat you both to some drinks later!"
Whether it's one sheep or two, they still need to be herded. If we can get Kong Yunfei's friend over, there’s a good chance we can sell another Rod.
"Don't mention him; he's seasick and just fell asleep. Let's enjoy ourselves without him. He probably can't even get out of bed right now!" With that excuse, Kong Yunfei pulled out some cigarettes and shared them with everyone on the boat, greeting them as if they were already acquainted.
"Alright, Feige, sit tight for a moment. I'll go to the kitchen and whip up a dish so we can have a proper gathering!" After finishing his greetings, Shi Tian turned and headed to the kitchen. He retrieved a large piece of Yellowfin Tuna Meat that had just been snatched from the jaws of Sea Wolf; that would be tonight's main course!
Once he prepared several plates of Sashimi, he placed them at one end of the boat. He had called for Head Brother earlier, but it seemed he had wandered off somewhere and hadn’t returned yet.
Even though Head Brother was absent, the drinks still needed to be set aside for him. If they couldn't be delivered this time, there would always be another opportunity next time he came around!
Carrying two cases of beer up to the deck, I found that everyone was already engaged in lively conversation.
Kong Yunfei’s social skills were impressive; in no time at all, he had blended in seamlessly with the others on board.
"Hainan is so much more comfortable! Most rivers in the capital are frozen over, making it impossible to fish! After downing a cold beer, Kong Yunfei sighed with relief. 'I went on a business trip to Shanghai yesterday, thinking that the rivers there wouldn’t be frozen yet and I could catch a few fish. But I ended up freezing by the river all day without catching a single one!'"
With the sudden drop in temperature, it wasn’t just in the capital; I heard that even Haikou was bundling up in down jackets!
That was somewhat exaggerated; Shi Tian wasn’t sure about Haikou wearing down jackets, but being in Northern Guangdong near Jian Ge meant they were definitely under blankets—winter wasn’t easy even in the south!
It was normal for fish not to bite after such a temperature drop; they had likely retreated to deeper waters! Ou Ge and Dog Brother must have experience with this! Shi Tian casually chimed in, although he didn’t have much experience himself.
He had only learned to fish a few months ago and hadn’t experienced winter fishing yet; he didn’t know much about it and didn’t want to expose his lack of knowledge!
Most fish tend not to bite in winter, but Carp and Grass Carp still might! It would be worth trying to fish in grassy areas with short lines—wherever there’s grass is where you should cast your line. Especially for Carp, the chances of hooking one are quite high! Touching upon his area of expertise allowed Wang Gou to finally shed his novice status.
As they discussed fishing techniques, Shi Chui joined in: "In winter, fish bites are light; you need to pay attention when choosing floats! Using Xing Brand’s short-legged slender Lu Wei Piao is great—it’s sensitive and more suitable for winter use. Otherwise, go for those feather floats."
Shi Chui had some experience with winter fishing and even more with Air Force techniques. He shared his accumulated knowledge from frequent visits to Air Force without holding back, hoping it would bring good fortune to Kong Yunfei!
Many people use traditional rods for winter fishing targeting Grass Nest primarily for Carp; it’s quite efficient! Earlier, Shi Tian mentioned his own experiences when Oka chimed in to share his insights.
Oka clarified that traditional rods weren’t short rods like Seven Star Float but rather eight or nine-meter-long Chang Gan rods—some even reaching thirteen meters.
A novice would struggle to adapt to such rods. Fully extended with light tips and no support from the rod itself while standing on the bank all day would leave one cold and exhausted—not exactly enjoyable.
Such rods shouldn’t be held at the tip; most people hold them at the second-to-last section instead. This way balances front and back weight and saves considerable effort.
However, this knowledge was secondhand; he hadn’t truly tested it himself. When abroad, they had their own fishing methods and didn’t have access to traditional rods. Even here in Sanya, he hadn’t experienced northern cold or encountered northern fishing conditions.
As Kong Yunfei began speaking again and others joined in with beers flowing freely, he couldn’t help but feel as if he had stumbled into a sales pitch—this group couldn’t stop talking about gear! Only Shi Tian remained quietly off to the side enjoying his snacks.
"Brother Fei, let's go down and catch some Squid!" After we reel in a few Squid, we can have Xiao Tian cook us Iron Plate Squid. His Squid dishes are the best! After discussing winter fishing, Shi Chui stood up and invited Kong Yunfei.
Kong Yunfei was probably a few years older than Shi Chui, and looking at his thinning hair, the title of 'brother' was well-deserved. Besides, when out having fun, calling each other brother or sister is just a nickname; Shi Chui wouldn’t call someone brother just to sell a few Rods.
His son had mentioned meeting a Fishing Buddy in Xishuangbanna, and now Shi Tian was enthusiastically inviting him onto the boat, clearly hoping to sell him some Fishing Gear! Since he was a potential customer, it was time to get down to business. The chances of catching Tuna here weren’t very high, so starting with Squid was a good idea—this was his specialty, after all; he had practiced all night yesterday!
"Alright, Shi Laodi! My Rod is still on that boat; I'll have someone pass it to me!" He stood up and followed Shi Chui down to the deck when Kong Yunfei quickly spoke up.
When Shi Tian introduced Shi Chui, he only mentioned him as Lao Shi and didn’t elaborate on their relationship. However, Kong Yunfei wasn’t foolish; he had done his research on Shi Tian and knew about Shi Chui and Yun Wan'er. Previously, Head Brother had mentioned fishing but hadn’t said that Shi Chui was on this boat. Seeing Shi Chui now made Kong Yunfei feel frustrated—his son had left out such important information!
"Is there any way you could be without your Rod on this boat? Just wait a moment; I'll find one for you!" With that, Shi Chui turned and headed into the cabin. A short while later, he returned with two Iron Plate Rods in hand and made his way to the Stern.
"How many days have you been fishing here?" Under Shi Chui's guidance, Kong Yunfei cast his first line and asked him.
"Two days. We’ll fish for half a day tomorrow before heading back!" After Kong Yunfei replied, he lifted his rod and suddenly pulled up a Little Squid, splattering ink all over the deck! This was something Shi Chui had seen countless times before.
