What kind of fish is this? So unruly? With the Loss Prevention Rope in hand, I rolled up my pants and waded into the river to secure it for Shi Tian. Air Force was eyeing Shi Tian's rod, seemingly eager to get involved.
Anyone who has caught a big fish knows that it's not always the biggest fish that puts up the greatest fight. Take the Carp, for instance. A five or six-pound Carp can leap and twist with all sorts of acrobatics, using every trick in the book to escape. If you lose focus for just a moment, it can slip away. But when you hook a fish weighing around twenty pounds, it becomes a different story. While it may be strong, it's more compliant—just a tug here and there, playing a tug-of-war without too much fuss.
The fish on Shi Tian's rod was clearly over twenty pounds. However, such a large fish still putting on such a show could not possibly be a Carp or a Grass Carp. I wasn't sure what it was yet; it hadn't surfaced, and since I was using worms as bait, who knows what might be on the line? With the Loss Prevention Rope secured and the rod upright, Shi Tian just had to wait for it to expend its initial energy before he could pull it out of the river.
Shi Tian had caught several types of big fish before—he had hooked Carp and even Giant Blues weighing in at pounds—but this fish was definitely different; its strength was entirely unique.
Oh! A Mian Gua! With that big head, it must weigh at least sixty or seventy pounds! Just as Shi Tian and Air Force were speculating about what was on the hook, a wave surged, and the fish broke the surface, revealing itself. In that brief moment, an old man behind us immediately called out its name.
While Shi Tian was battling this big fish, several old men from below had already reeled in their rods and rushed over to see what was happening. One had caught a Lophius while another had hooked a Ma Kou; they were all chasing after each other’s catches, enjoying themselves immensely. Occasionally landing a Little Carp felt like celebrating New Year’s!
However, Air Force was continuously reeling in Carp after Carp. What were once considered treasures like Ma Kou and Lophius were quickly relegated to the category of nuisance White-striped Catfish by them.
This was bearable for now; Air Force’s steady stream of Carp indicated he must have some exclusive bait that they couldn’t hope to replicate. After all, his companions were still stuck using worms.
From another perspective, if they had access to such bait, they certainly wouldn’t share it freely. As Air Force continued to catch big fish one after another while a group of fishermen watched in awe, it truly felt like a highlight moment for any angler! Not only could they not share in the glory, but they also wanted to savor it for as long as possible!
But with Shi Tian hooking into such a massive Giant Fish weighing dozens of pounds, how could they hold back? They couldn’t get their hands on Air Force’s bait, but surely they could dig up some worms from the bushes! They had seen Shi Tian pulling his worms right from the grass!
Their lack of big catches wasn’t due to bait but rather the fishing spot! Once everything was packed up, armed with their tools to dig up some worms, they were just waiting for Shi Tian’s line to snap so they could take over his fishing spot!
Mian Gua? What is that? Isn’t that just another name for Catfish around here? Finally pulling it out of the water, Shi Tian felt relaxed enough to chat a bit.
It’s indeed a Catfish, but different from your average one; this fish has yellow flesh that isn’t particularly tasty!
I hadn’t seen one in years; those from the Lancang River are nearly extinct due to electric fishing! One old man said this while another pulled out his phone to take pictures as soon as the fish surfaced.
The fish in this river used to be truly massive! It was common to catch ones weighing a pound or two!
A few old men, each taking turns, were reminiscing about their childhood days spent fishing in the river as they struggled with this one fish.
Is it nearly extinct? If so, they really shouldn't let this one die; it would be like robbing those old men of their childhood memories.
After some effort, the fish on the hook finally surrendered. It still wanted to put up a fight, but the impatience of the Air Force crew led them to pull it up with a net.
This fish had been struggling for half an hour; it was about time to bring it up, or else all the other fish in its spot would escape!
He had been daydreaming about parading this big catch through the Water Market tonight. To have something to boast about, he even looked up information on this type of fish beforehand.
