In Xishuangbanna, there are some traditional fishing methods that have mostly come from Southeast Asia, such as the Guo Jiang Diao, which is also said to have originated from Zigong.
A line is set up across the river, suspended in the air, with sub-lines tied at appropriate lengths according to the water depth, dropping into the water. This method is somewhat similar to using a baiting hook, but their main line is elevated above the water. Nowadays, they have switched to using pulleys; with pulleys set up on both sides, they tie the hooks and lower them down. After waiting for about twenty seconds, they pull up the line, and the catch rate is still quite high.
Shi Tian had been patiently waiting for less than ten minutes when the float began to sink. He raised his rod to strike at a fish, creating a splash in the water. A little carp weighing less than two pounds came up, making the older brother beside him feel a bit envious.
"Lotus Carp," he thought. "Well, there's no comparison; he's in his Beginner Protection Period and has that aura about him. I can't compete with that! Once his Beginner Protection Period is over, it will be fine! A fisherman must keep his spirits high and not compare himself with others!"
After comforting himself, he lifted his rod to change bait and cast it back into the water. He patiently waited for six minutes, watching the float for any movement. As soon as he felt a tug, he grasped the rod tightly, ready to strike!
The float dipped down sharply; he raised his rod with a quick motion that nearly snapped it in half. A small Lophius arched gracefully through the air before almost hitting him in the face! His heart raced!
Where did that splash come from? Turning around, he saw Shi Tian had hooked another fish! This one was bigger than the last.
"Don't let it get away!" he called out. "Help out a newbie!"
"Be gentle; be careful not to lose it!" He urged as he grabbed his net and moved toward Shi Tian.
"What?" Shi Tian exclaimed as he turned around with an innocent look, glancing at the net in the older brother's hand. He chuckled inwardly—was that net really necessary for such a small fish?
"Uh! Never mind, that's impressive! You've caught two already, all carp!" The older brother awkwardly laughed and returned to his fishing spot, glancing at his bait. "Could it be I bought a jig? Why am I only catching small Lophius?"
With one rod catching Lophius and Shi Tian's rod bringing in carp, it became clear that after an hour of fishing, seeing Shi Tian's six carp made the older brother's mood falter.
Shi Tian was using worms; perhaps he should dig for some too! Taking advantage of a moment alone, he snuck into the bushes and spent over ten minutes digging up some worms before returning with a handful.
Switching to worms, he cast his line again—surely this time it wouldn't just be Lophius!
Seeing Shi Tian raise his rod once more made the older brother think that soon he could catch carp too! A little carp weighing about half a pound came up; Shi Tian casually tossed it back into the river. "This fish is too small; let it grow a few years before coming back to play with Uncle!"
Suddenly, a big Hei Piao caught the older brother's attention. He gripped his rod tightly and pulled hard—finally, it was his turn to catch a big fish!
A small Bitterling leaped into the air thanks to its flat body but got hooked on its lip instead. It fell back into the water just a step away from him with a splash that stunned it!
"This fish would taste great if fried," he thought.
"Brother," Shi Tian chimed in with advice this time. "You need to lift your rod quickly but gently; otherwise, you might lose a big fish!"
After finishing his words, the older brother turned to glance at Shi Tian. There was nothing wrong with what he said, but why did it sound so grating? Was this kid mocking him?
Shi Tian had switched bait, yet he was still catching Carp in quick succession, while here, he was struggling to reel in Bitterlings!
Using the same worms and fishing in spots that were only a few meters apart, he was confident that his skills could easily outshine that kid's. So why couldn't he catch any Carp?
He glanced at the Rod in Shi Tian's hands. He had just tried it out earlier, and it felt pretty good. Could it be a problem with his own Rod?
Though he knew deep down that the issue certainly wasn't with the Rod, the experience of using Shi Tian's Rod lingered in his mind. Perhaps he should buy one to give it a shot?
He pulled out his phone, opened Dog Dong, and searched for the Rod. The Price was indeed twelve hundred; that seemed right. He decided to get a Seven Point Two first, and if it worked well, he'd come back for a full set!
Just then, two more Carp were reeled in. Air Force and Lu Ya had already arrived with their gear.
He had gone back to check the surveillance earlier; Shi Tian had left with his Rod and Yu Hu without even driving his car, so he couldn't have gone far.
Walking along the riverbank, he soon spotted Shi Tian squatting on a rock fishing. What was wrong with this guy? There were Fishing Boxes and Fishing Chairs in the car; why didn’t he bring one? Was sitting on a rock somehow more appealing?
