My name is Lili, and I am a primary school Chinese teacher. My husband's name is Chen Hui, and he is a blasting worker for the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet railway line. Just two months after we got married, Chen Hui bought a train ticket to Xining without consulting me, in order to meet a construction deadline. Shortly after he left, I found out that I was pregnant, and later gave birth to a pair of twins, a boy named Xiao Gang and a girl named Xiao Mei. In the delivery room, the husbands of other women were all by their side, providing warmth and care, but I was alone. Since both sets of parents were in our hometown, my colleagues took turns to take care of me during my postpartum recovery.
Every evening, when I see the tender faces of the two children, I can't help but secretly wipe away tears. Fortunately, the two children are well-behaved, not crying or making trouble, which makes me feel relieved.
Occasionally, Chen Hui would call me to ask about the children and me, but we couldn't talk for long before having to hang up. I also wanted to ask him why he was so busy, but I never managed to ask.
The centennial photo is a picture of Xiao Gang and Xiaomei together. I sent it to Chen Hui, and he said on the phone, "Lili, thank you for your hard work. This year, I will definitely come home to accompany you and the children. My colleagues all say that I am blessed to have twins, a boy and a girl, all at once."
Once, Chen Hui called my school. Because there were many teachers in the office, it was not easy to speak privately. I could only hold back my tears and say, "You don't need to worry about the child," "Take care of yourself over there." Until the end of the call, he whispered, "Lili, I dream of you and the child every night. I really miss you both... I have good news to tell you, I will be back next month."
When I heard this, I was so happy, as if I could already see Chen Hui holding Xiao Gang and Xiaomei, and us having a reunion dinner.
In the summer of 1983, I was organizing a cleanup in the classroom. Teacher Wang from the office excitedly called me at the classroom door, "Ms. Feng, hurry, it's your husband on the phone."
As soon as I heard it was Chen Hui calling, I hurried to answer. Suppressing my excitement, I picked up the phone and without waiting for him to speak, I asked eagerly, "When are you coming back? Have you bought the train ticket? I have time to bring Xiao Gang and Xiaomei to pick you up."
But the voice on the other end of the phone was not Chen Hui's: "Is this Chen Hui's loved one? I am his supervisor. Hurry and buy a train ticket to come over. There was an accident during the explosion, and Chen Hui is currently in the hospital being treated. He wants to see you... you need to be mentally prepared."
I sat down on the chair, and the last sentence kept echoing in my mind.
I bought a train ticket to Xining for that night. As I rode my bike home holding the ticket, my legs were weak and my hands were shaking.
In my heart, I silently prayed, "Dear God, please keep Chen Hui safe and sound. He must be okay. My children and I are still waiting for him to come home."
Bringing the two children back home, I felt completely dazed, as if there were two voices constantly talking to me in my head, causing chaos. One voice said, "People have to die before they let you go." The other said, "It's not that serious, you're still so young."
Back at home, I held the two children tightly, gripping their little hands, my voice trembling slightly.
" Xiao Gang, Xiaomei, shall we go see Daddy?"
They blinked their eyes, smiled at me, and Xiao Gang opened his arms for me to hold. I don't know if it's because he's a boy, but he always seems very hungry, and he spends much more time nursing than Xiaomei.
