After a day of fishing, I took some time to spread a bit of warmth. When I returned to the shop, Su Xueyi was still at work.
I called over to Sun Lang, who was fishing across from me, to help lift the huge fish tank I had bought on the way. We filled it with water, set up the aerator, and transferred the lively Xiao Yu from the fish bucket into the tank. Shi Tian was ready to wait for Su Xueyi before making any moves!
However, even after finishing everything, Sun Lang hadn’t left yet.
“Boss, are you hiring anyone at this shop?” he asked quietly as he leaned closer to Shi Tian after glancing at Su Xueyi.
This question completely caught Shi Tian off guard! Hiring? The tiny shop already had one part-time worker; did they really need more?
It wasn't that hiring someone was out of the question. From four in the morning to eight in the morning, and six in the evening to eight at night, bringing in another part-timer to cover those hours could be beneficial. But that would increase costs significantly!
Su Xueyi earned fifteen a day; by her standards, hiring another part-timer would add another expense. With costs rising like that, would there even be any profit left?
The shop's daily revenue barely reached a thousand; if they hired two people and paid nearly three hundred a day, would there still be any profit left for him?
To increase sales of Fish Hook, hiring someone might indeed be necessary. But then again, it would mean neglecting his own interests in running the shop freely.
For Shi Tian, whether or not to hire someone didn’t matter much. Bringing in another person could ease his workload and allow him to focus on other things, which wasn’t a bad idea!
But something felt off! Did Sun Lang need money? Logically speaking, he shouldn’t be short on cash!
When Shi Tian first saw Sun Lang, he noticed that while his car wasn’t anything special—just a few thousand dollars—the gear he had was quite expensive and bore the same brand as what Yun Wan'er had bought.
If he wasn’t here to work for money, what was his purpose? After thinking for a moment, Shi Tian suddenly jumped back a step and stared at Sun Lang before turning to Su Xueyi. “Xiaoxue, this guy doesn’t seem like a good person! You need to be careful!”
If he wasn’t here to earn money, then what else could it be? It must be for chasing girls! After all, those Fishing Rods weren’t worth much; Sun Lang didn’t even blink when he bought them!
Seeing Shi Tian’s startled expression, Su Xueyi just smiled from behind the counter without saying anything. Meanwhile, Sun Lang’s face darkened like the bottom of a pot.
He pulled out his ID card from his pocket, which also had a red card printed with the words “Veteran Discount Card.”
Slapping the ID down in front of Shi Tian with a scowl on his face, Sun Lang said, “Open your eyes and take a good look! This is a good person card issued by the government! Do I look like a bad person now?”
The Veteran Discount Card truly was a good person card issued by the government; if misused, it would be revoked. So anyone holding this card couldn’t exactly be labeled as a bad person—at least not legally!
Shi Tian picked up Sun Lang’s ID and examined it twice; this card was indeed quite useful. At least in provincial scenic spots, entry was free. Many tourist attractions across the country offered discounts too; even at train stations, having this card provided benefits!
After returning Sun Lang’s ID back into his pocket, Shi Tian threw an arm around his shoulder with a grin. “Just kidding! Why so serious? Come on, let’s talk about your application!”
Leading Sun Lang outside the shop, Shi Tian continued with a smile: “We definitely need to hire someone for the shop. We need someone during those early hours from four to eight in the morning and six to eight in the evening! But you know my shop is small with thin profits; wages won’t be high! Is that something you can accept?”
There was no need for the Fishing Tackle Shop to stay open until ten at night or even open at four in the morning. However, it was just too hot during the day in Sanya; fishing could only really happen during those early morning and late evening hours.
Opening early meant they could catch fish until around ten o'clock; as for evenings, after eight o'clock when rush hour ended, there wouldn’t be many customers left!
Hearing Shi Tian calling for him, Sun Lang shrugged nonchalantly and said, "The salary doesn't matter; just give me whatever you think is fair! But can we extend the working hours a bit? How about from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon, and then from eight in the evening?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Sun Lang's true intentions became clear—he was here to flirt! Extending the working hours meant he could spend two hours in the morning with Su Xueyi and another two hours in the afternoon. He had it all figured out!
"Old Sun, think about it this way! If you finish at eight in the morning, you’ll have to hand over your shift to Su Xueyi, right? After that, you can grab breakfast and maybe bring her a milk tea or an ice cream. Isn’t that nice?"
The same logic applied in the afternoon. Before starting work, Su Xueyi would probably not have eaten yet! If you came in half an hour early with some dinner for her, it would be a nice gesture. You bring her something, she brings you something back—before you know it, feelings might develop! Besides, I never said you couldn't stay in the shop after your shift ended!
When Sun Lang flashed his Veteran Discount Card earlier, Su Xueyi didn’t seem surprised; perhaps she already knew. In the past couple of days that he was away, Sun Lang had likely spent quite a bit of time with her. Now he was fully equipped for fishing; they must have hit it off.
Since Su Xueyi didn’t seem to mind, he didn’t care either. If she helped him snag some cheap labor, he wouldn’t be rude about it!
After Shi Tian's words, Sun Lang appeared a bit dazed. Realizing this wasn’t going anywhere good, Shi Tian felt it was time to discuss a contract.
"Old Sun! The shop’s income is limited. How much do you think is a reasonable salary? Let’s get your head back in the game," Shi Tian said as he turned Sun Lang’s head back toward him, eager to finalize things while Sun Lang was still lost in thought.
"The salary doesn’t matter—two thousand or three thousand—it’s up to you!" Sun Lang said impatiently as he shrugged off Shi Tian's hand. Then his eyes lit up with an idea: "How about we just add my salary to Su Xueyi's? You could give her a little raise!"
Upon hearing this, Shi Tian couldn’t help but curse under his breath: "You love-struck fool! Be careful not to end up with nothing!"
"You’ll work six hours a day for two thousand a month; that’s settled! We’ll sign the contract tomorrow!" Shi Tian declared.
After saying that, he thought for a moment and added, "You could discuss with Su Xueyi about starting at four in the morning until ten and then let her take over until eight at night! But if she’s working that late, you’ll need to drive her home!"
Realizing how inappropriate that sounded given how little time they had known each other, Shi Tian quickly backtracked. "Let’s hold off on that for now; we can talk about it next month! If we discuss it now, I won’t approve!"
Back at the shop, Su Xueyi was already preparing to leave for the day. Watching her accompany Sun Lang as they packed up his fishing gear made Shi Tian feel a pang of jealousy.
He was supposed to be a Little Boss himself; yet in the eyes of beautiful women, he felt overshadowed by someone who could carry a gun! It was true that those who could wield weapons were quite impressive—too bad he missed his chance! At his age now, no one would want him for military service!
At eight o'clock in the evening, Shi Tian locked the shop door from inside and grabbed a fish hook. Carefully threading a worm onto it, he gently lowered the hook into the fish tank.
The tank was densely populated with fish; among so many of them, there were bound to be a few reckless ones. For instance, as soon as the hook approached its mouth, Pahdi Hu didn’t hesitate and swallowed it whole!
