The line for reef fishing always felt a bit too heavy. After setting up the line for Uncle Zhang, Shi Tian prepared another line setup for him. This setup was designed for catching fish weighing dozens of pounds, but I decided to give him a finer line that would be more suitable for fish under ten pounds. With this fine line, he wouldn't need to use brute force to reel in a ten-pound fish!
In reef fishing, it's rare to catch anything too large; ten pounds is a significant threshold, and usually, the catch consists of small fish weighing one or two pounds. However, this rod could cast far, and using a fine line might not be ideal. If he hooked a big fish, it could be challenging to pull it in!
Once the rod was ready, I handed Uncle Zhang a landing net and scooped half a pound of live shrimp from the tank—enough for him to enjoy an afternoon of fishing! After adjusting the float and teaching him how to hook the live shrimp, Uncle Zhang scanned the QR code and then hurried off with the rod and landing net to the opposite side. The shop was quiet again.
Watching Uncle Zhang fumble with his casting on the other side, Shi Tian turned back to glance at the fishing tackle shop. He pulled out his phone and ordered four cameras. The staff wasn't easy to deal with, but cameras were more reliable; he paid upfront, and they should arrive in two days!
With a few cameras installed in the shop, he could occasionally stroll over to check on things. Modern cameras are powerful; once set up, he'd receive notifications on his phone whenever someone entered the store.
He ordered four cameras: two for inside the shop, one for the open space in front of the door, and another to install under the eaves outside on the second floor, capturing the fishing spot across the street—comprehensive coverage that would be very useful!
With his rod in hand, he selected a large live shrimp and hooked it on. Shui Laoban drew back his rod and made a sweeping motion before casting it out with force. As he released his grip on the line, the lead weight carrying the live shrimp shot through the air and landed straight onto the sea surface!
That rod cast really far! He sighed in admiration as he reeled in some line, watching as the float bobbed ten meters away on the water's surface—a sight that brought him great pleasure. After waiting for two minutes, he decided to reel it back in. At such a distance, the water would surely be deeper; it was time to adjust that float!
Casting with an Iso rod gave him a sense of long-distance capability; using Apo Fishing techniques would surely allow him to catch big fish that others couldn't reach!
After adjusting the float and replacing it with another live shrimp, he cast out again without any issues!
Meanwhile, Uncle Zhang was having some trouble. It was his first time using an Iso rod, and without any casting experience, he had forgotten most of what Shi Tian had taught him earlier at the shop. Now that he was actually trying it out, his mind was blank despite having learned some techniques.
After struggling for quite some time without successfully casting out his hook, Shui Laoban glanced over at Uncle Zhang and sighed. He had led him into this predicament; now he needed to help him get out of it!
Casting a rod isn't just about swinging it; you first need to reel in some line, hold onto it with your finger on the hook line while opening the line lock. You release your finger at just the right moment to cast far—this takes practice!
There’s also a drag adjustment; when you hook a big fish, you can't just pull hard. Adjusting this correctly allows you to pull gently on the fishing line—ideally enough to bring in your catch without risking breakage or snapping your rod!
And there’s also an anti-reverse switch used mainly for boat fishing; here it's not really necessary—you just need to set it correctly!
After thoroughly explaining everything to Uncle Zhang and offering guidance along the way, he finally managed to cast out his hook! Unfortunately, it landed a bit too close—only about ten meters away at most!
He glanced at his float, confirming it was still intact, and Shui Laoban began to show off his skills to Uncle Zhang again.
"You cast your rod too far to the side. Next time, swing the rod behind you and then flick it straight out towards where you want to cast! When you cast, make sure your index finger is angled on the line on the rod, and the wheel must be facing down. Don't focus on the water surface; keep your eyes on the area above it in the air."
Before the hook hit the water, he quickly covered the reel to avoid letting out too much line. Once it splashed down, he needed to lift the rod quickly to prevent the hook from snagging on the line or float!
"Damn, I've got a fish! Quickly lift the rod and reel it in!"
Just as Shui Laoban was getting into it, Uncle Zhang suddenly hooked a fish! In a flurry, he directed Uncle Zhang to reel it in. Judging by how bent the rod was, this fish should be a good one, weighing at least four or five pounds.
Uncle Zhang's hands were still nimble; he hooked a fish on his very first cast! Shi Tian glanced around and noticed there weren't many people on the street, so he hurried over to assemble Uncle Zhang's landing net.
"Equipment needs to be blessed! We can't waste such a good opportunity!"
For Uncle Zhang, playing with fish was not in his vocabulary. He dealt with heavy tools every day, so he certainly had strength in his hands.
The line had not gone far when Shi Tian finished assembling the landing net. Uncle Zhang was already eager to bring the fish ashore. Fortunately, Shi Tian was quick; he plunged the net into the water and swiftly scooped up the fish.
It was a big Black Sea Bream, probably over three pounds! "Uncle Zhang, you're off to a great start!" Shi Tian said with a smile as he helped Uncle Zhang remove the hook from the fish.
This time for sure, Uncle Zhang had officially entered the game! This Black Sea Bream must be worth at least a few dollars; Uncle Zhang had already recouped ten percent of his investment!
Holding such a large Black Sea Bream was tricky since it was still flopping around. Shi Tian handed the landing net to Uncle Zhang and said, "Uncle Zhang, take this fish back first! I'll keep an eye on your rod; you hurry back!"
The fish bucket wasn’t much use for Uncle Zhang; putting the fish in it was almost like just carrying it home directly.
Holding up the fish in the landing net, Uncle Zhang couldn't stop grinning. "Is fishing really this easy? Just watch for me; I’ll take this fish back right away!"
He initially thought about showing off along the way but remembered Hai Li's desire for fresh fish. So Uncle Zhang quickened his pace and dashed back home with lightning speed, grabbing a large bucket on his way out.
"I can't keep sending every catch back home! That would be too much trouble. It’s better to bring out a bucket; once it's full of fish, I can take them all back at once. That will save me a lot of hassle!"
