Tang An'an returned to the classroom after morning exercises, only to find that Lu Ziqi and Zhu Mingxuan were the only ones there. They sat in the back row, whispering to each other, their laughter bubbling over at something Zhu Mingxuan had said.
Intent on drawing their attention, Tang An'an deliberately stomped her foot heavily.
Lu Ziqi raised an eyebrow and shot her a provocative glance, while Zhu Mingxuan appeared somewhat embarrassed, silently standing up and walking back to his seat.
"What are you talking about?" During breakfast, Tang An'an feigned nonchalance as she asked.
"Nothing," Zhu Mingxuan replied absentmindedly, his gaze flickering. "We were discussing some problems."
"What problems?" Tang An'an pressed on, refusing to let it go.
"Do you really want to know?" Zhu Mingxuan suddenly halted, fixing her with an intense stare that held a hint of something unsettling. "We were discussing how long it would take to fall from the tenth floor in free fall, ignoring air resistance; and we were also talking about a 45-kilogram person hanging from a noose, assuming the rope stretches two centimeters, what the elasticity coefficient would be."
With that, Zhu Mingxuan strode toward the cafeteria, leaving Tang An'an's face pale in shock.
The first class was a physics test. About five minutes into the exam, the teacher suddenly looked up and asked, "Who isn't here today?"
Students lifted their heads from their papers, exchanging confused glances. They weren't surprised by an extra test paper; rather, they were astonished that no one had noticed a classmate was missing.
In this suffocating atmosphere, it seemed as if everyone's thoughts had dulled.
About a minute later, Tang An'an suddenly shouted, "Chen Yao, Chen Yao is missing!"
The classroom erupted into chaos as students began to whisper and speculate among themselves.
Strangely, aside from the anxious expressions, Tang An'an noticed that many faces also revealed a hint of delight, as if Chen Yao's disappearance had triggered a chain reaction akin to an atomic bomb in this oppressive environment.
Everyone was yearning for change; everyone was eager for chaos.
The playground, dormitories, Small Auditorium, office... They searched nearly every corner of the school, but no one knew where Chen Yao had gone. Even Tang An'an herself hadn’t realized that she had completely overlooked Chen Yao's absence due to her quarrel with Zhu Mingxuan.
Worried that the situation might escalate, the school decided to bypass the police and organized students to search around the campus.
Teachers and students spent an entire day searching, but as the sun began to set, they gradually dispersed.
Tang An'an found herself alone on the back mountain. She struggled to push aside a tangle of weeds at the top when suddenly an owl let out a piercing cry and flapped its wings away.
She noticed a rope hanging down from a tree and instinctively reached out to tug on it. A shadow fell with a thud right in front of her.
She had finally found Chen Yao. At that moment, Chen Yao was hanging from the tree with her head drooping, her eyes wide open as if they were about to pop out of her face. Tang An'an covered her mouth, tears streaming down uncontrollably.
Suppressing her overwhelming fear, Tang An'an lowered her friend's lifeless body but suddenly noticed that Chen Yao's fingers were still bleeding.
On her manicured hands, one fingernail had been brutally ripped off.
Looking at the rope on the ground, Tang An'an suddenly recalled Zhu Mingxuan's words from the morning: "We are discussing a 45-kilogram person hanging themselves. Assuming the rope stretches two centimeters, what is the elastic modulus?"
What is it? What is it? Damn it, what is the elastic modulus? Tang An'an felt as if they were all being driven to madness by this cursed physics.
