I focused my gaze on the notebook in my hand, recalling the recent events that had transpired. The names of Doctor Zhang, Doctor Li, and the family member of a patient kept surfacing in my mind. Each was intricately connected to the case, yet each seemed to harbor no obvious flaws.
Their expressions, words, and actions all raised doubts within me, but I needed more concrete evidence to point towards the truth. Doctor Zhang was a highly respected orthopedic specialist at the hospital, but recently his demeanor had been somewhat unusual. I remembered one day during rounds when I accidentally overheard him on a phone call, his tone agitated as he vaguely mentioned terms like "loan" and "collections." At that moment, my intuition told me this was no ordinary call.
In the following rounds, I began to deliberately approach Doctor Zhang, probing his limits. Once, I casually brought up topics of investment and debt; his facial muscles twitched noticeably before he quickly changed the subject. Though he masked it well, that fleeting expression had already betrayed his inner turmoil.
At the same time, Doctor Li's figure lingered in my thoughts. He was a taciturn man who did not get along well with his colleagues. I recalled a moment during rounds when I inadvertently mentioned his past; a flicker of anger and resentment flashed in his eyes. This reminded me of an incident from years ago when I was still a junior doctor. I had discovered a medical error he made and felt compelled to report it to my superiors. Although that action prevented a disaster, it also led to disciplinary action against Doctor Li. Since then, his attitude towards me had turned cold, even tinged with hostility. Could he still harbor resentment over that incident?
As for the family member of the patient, her presence complicated matters further. She was a middle-aged woman with a haggard appearance, seemingly perpetually filled with bitterness. Her child had been admitted to the ICU due to worsening conditions, and my decisions regarding resource allocation had evidently displeased her. During one round, I overheard her quietly complaining to another family member: "If it weren't for him, my child could have received better treatment." Her voice was laden with anger and despair, emotions that tightened my chest.
As a doctor, I understood that my choices could impact a patient's life or death, but I had never anticipated that my decisions would evoke such intense hatred. With the investigation deepening, I began to realize that these three individuals might not be as disconnected as they appeared.
Would Doctor Zhang's debt issues drive him to take desperate measures? Would Doctor Li secretly assist out of revenge? And would the despair of that patient's family member become a trigger point? Countless possibilities flooded my mind, yet each one lacked sufficient evidence to support it.
During this process, I once again turned to the power of Ancient Jade, hoping it would guide me. As I closed my eyes and held Ancient Jade in my hand, a blurry vision of the future flashed in my mind. I saw a dimly lit room where Doctor Zhang was deep in thought, Doctor Li stood nearby seemingly arguing, and the family member of the patient sat in the corner, weeping uncontrollably. However, the image was too vague for me to extract any more information.
Worse still, I sensed that Ancient Jade's power was waning. With each use, the visions it provided became increasingly unclear and shorter in duration. This meant that my time was running out.
Just as I was feeling overwhelmed by this realization, Xiao Ai appeared by my side. She was my capable assistant and one of the people I trusted most. Upon learning of my predicament, she volunteered to help me investigate the truth.
"Lin Hao, we can't rely solely on your intuition and Ancient Jade. The clues are right around us; we just need to analyze them more carefully," she said, illuminating a path forward.
We began to divide our tasks: she would organize the surveillance footage from the hospital while I continued to probe Doctor Zhang, Doctor Li, and the family member of the patient in a loop. Through repeated exchanges of information, we uncovered some intriguing details. For instance, Doctor Zhang had met with the patient's family member alone at one point; there seemed to be some sort of secret transaction between them. Additionally, Doctor Li had previously had a heated argument with Doctor Zhang, yet no one knew what it was about.
As our investigation progressed, we drew closer to the truth. However, we also found ourselves facing greater dangers. One night, while Xiao Ai and I were reviewing crucial documents, we suddenly heard hurried footsteps outside the office door, followed by someone attempting to unlock it with a key. Our hearts raced as we quickly hid the documents and pretended to be nonchalantly seated at our desks.
When the door swung open, a stranger stood there. He glanced at us without saying a word and then turned to leave.
This moment made me realize that we had already touched upon the interests of certain individuals who would not allow us to continue our investigation easily.
Despite this, we did not back down. Each clue was like a piece of a puzzle, gradually revealing a terrifying truth.
What this truth was remained to be uncovered through our continued efforts. Time was running out, and danger was closing in, yet my resolve had never been stronger.
