The two walked side by side into the garden, surrounded by lush greenery. The trees stretched their branches and leaves as if warmly welcoming them. The winding path was covered with small pebbles. Lu Zean slowed his pace to match Lin Xiao Yu's, occasionally glancing at her and softly asking, "Have you been able to handle the intensity of your training lately?"
Lin Xiao Yu brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled in response, "I'm fine, just a bit sore in my muscles. I'll get used to it. Don't worry about me too much; your academic pressure is no small matter either."
Before long, a shimmering lake came into view, with boats gently drifting on its surface. Lu Zean's eyes lit up as he tugged at Lin Xiao Yu's arm excitedly, saying, "Let's go boating! It’ll be so relaxing to drift on the water." Lin Xiao Yu laughed at his childlike enthusiasm and agreed, "Sure, let's experience floating on the water."
After renting a boat, Lu Zean carefully helped Lin Xiao Yu aboard. Once she was settled, he untied the rope and picked up the oars, gently paddling through the lake. The small boat glided forward, creating ripples on the water's surface. As he rowed, he looked at Lin Xiao Yu and teased, "Look at this beautiful scenery; with you here, it’s like a perfect painting." Lin Xiao Yu's cheeks flushed as she playfully scolded him, "You’re just sweet-talking me." Despite her words, she felt a warmth in her heart.
As they reached the center of the lake, a gentle breeze stirred their hair. Lin Xiao Yu closed her eyes, quietly savoring the tranquility and comfort of the moment. She murmured, "It's so rare to relax like this; every day at school feels like being wound too tightly." Lu Zean paused rowing and let the boat sway gently with the waves. He took her hand seriously and said, "Whenever we have the chance in the future, let’s come out more often. Don’t tire yourself out too much; it worries me."
After disembarking from the boat, they strolled along the lakeside, feeling increasingly relaxed. Lu Zean scratched his head with a grin that hinted at suppressed laughter as he began sharing amusing stories from campus life: "Those guys in our dorm are quite something. Last time we did a chemistry experiment—it was hilarious! Just thinking about it makes me laugh."
He continued animatedly: "The lab table was filled with all sorts of glassware and colorful reagents that looked impressive. One of my classmates, Li Hao, is usually pretty carefree and that day was no exception. We had to prepare a rather complex solution by adding reagents in order. Everyone was focused, eyes wide like saucers as we watched the pipette closely to avoid any mistakes."
As he spoke, Lu Zean mimicked their actions from that day—bending slightly forward with his right hand pretending to hold a pipette while staring intently at his left palm. He continued: "But Li Hao was too busy chatting with someone next to him about how exciting the basketball game this weekend would be; he completely lost track of what he was doing. He ended up pouring in the catalyst first instead of last! Suddenly there was a reaction—bubbles started forming like little fish blowing bubbles! Before we knew it, it erupted like boiling water—bubbles surged up violently and turned the solution murky while making sizzling sounds; it felt like it would explode any second!"
He exaggeratedly widened his eyes and gestured with his hands to show how the test tube expanded. "We were all stunned! One timid roommate jumped back so far that he nearly knocked over some equipment behind him. I panicked too; just as I was thinking about what to do next, our instructor burst in like a whirlwind—his speed rivaled that of a firefighter! He wore goggles and had a serious look on his face as he quickly took care of the test tube in the fume hood while scolding us loudly—the sound echoed throughout the lab! Especially when he reprimanded Li Hao; his eyebrows were practically knitted together! We all lowered our heads in silence like wilted eggplants."
"But thanks to that incident," Lu Zean added with a chuckle, "everyone became much more serious about experiments afterward; no one dared to be careless again!"
Lin Xiao Yu laughed so hard that tears nearly filled her eyes as she clutched her stomach in amusement. "You guys are such characters! What happened next?"
Lu Zean shrugged with a smile and replied, "Of course we got scolded thoroughly by our instructor afterward. But everyone learned their lesson; no one dared to be careless again!"
Not wanting to be outdone, Lin Xiao Yu eagerly shared her own rehearsal stories: "Our drama rehearsals are full of surprises! There’s this emotional scene where our male lead is a shy freshman named Zhang Chi. He has to confess his feelings to the female lead with heartfelt lines that are quite lengthy and require delicate expressions and movements."
"On rehearsal day," she continued animatedly while mimicking Zhang Chi's nervousness—her body trembling slightly as she looked ahead timidly—"he froze up on stage as if under a spell! He didn’t know where to put his hands or feet; he clutched his shirt tightly until it almost got misshaped."
"When he finally spoke," she said with vivid expression, "his lines came out stutteringly like an old tape recorder skipping—he forgot his lines after just a few words! The director was sitting below casually leaning back in his chair but shot upright when he heard this chaos; his brows furrowed so tightly they could squash a fly! He shouted 'Cut!' repeatedly until his voice nearly went hoarse."
"But Zhang Chi only got more flustered," she added dramatically while wiping imaginary sweat from her forehead. "In his panic, he accidentally started saying lines meant for his scene partner instead—delivering them passionately but completely out of context! Everyone froze for a moment before bursting into laughter; one classmate even fell over laughing and knocked over props everywhere! The director’s face turned dark as thunderclouds; he stood up with hands on hips unable to speak from anger—just glaring at us!"
Lu Zean laughed until tears nearly streamed down his face and exclaimed: "Your rehearsal room sounds livelier than a comedy stage!"
As they exchanged stories filled with laughter along the lakeside, they unknowingly wandered into a secluded thicket where vibrant flowers bloomed abundantly around them, exuding rich fragrances. Warm sunlight filtered through the leaves above them casting dappled shadows on the ground—a dreamy little world seemed woven just for them.
Lu Zean's heart raced suddenly as he stopped walking and gazed intently at Lin Xiao Yu. His throat felt tight as if something lodged there; after what felt like an eternity he finally found his voice and softly called out her name with a hint of tremor laced with deep emotion.
Lin Xiao Yu looked up at him; her cheeks flushed from both their earlier laughter and this moment’s tension while her eyes sparkled like hidden stars against an ocean.
Slowly reaching out his hand, Lu Zean gently caressed Lin Xiao Yu’s cheek with his fingertips tracing her delicate skin as he drew closer. Their breaths quickened in unison as Lin Xiao Yu tilted her head slightly back with closed eyes; her long lashes fluttering nervously while her chest rose and fell rhythmically.
When their noses brushed against each other lightly, Lu Zean finally summoned enough courage to tenderly press his lips against hers—a fleeting kiss filled with deep affection that felt like an imprint etched into their hearts.
As they parted slightly, their gazes locked together filled with shyness and sweetness while their hands instinctively intertwined tighter—this kiss drawing them closer than ever before amidst an atmosphere thick with unspoken feelings that deepened their bond further still.
