Aunt Huang Ling rushed over, wiping her hands on her apron, her face beaming with a smile as she grabbed his arm and chattered, "Oh, Lin Dongzhe, you dear child, you’ve brought so many delicious treats from so far away. You must be exhausted from the journey!"
Lin Dongzhe finally snapped back to reality, scratching his head and grinning sheepishly. He waved his hand dismissively, saying, "Not at all, Auntie! I’ve missed you all!" Yet his eyes couldn’t help but sneak glances at Xiao Ting, filled with a fiery warmth that anyone could easily notice.
Everyone gathered around, chatting about mundane matters when Teacher Zhuang put down his red pen and removed his reading glasses. His gaze softened with the unique expectations of an elder as he looked at Lin Dongzhe and asked gently, "Lin Dongzhe, it’s been a while since the college entrance exam results were released. Which university have you been accepted to?"
At this question, the room felt like it had been paused; all eyes turned eagerly towards Lin Dongzhe, waiting for his response.
Initially light-hearted and playful, Lin Dongzhe straightened up at the question. He sat up tall, his hands unconsciously rubbing his knees as a slight blush crept onto his face, tinged with nervousness and an uncontainable pride. Clearing his throat, he raised his voice a notch and declared loudly, "Teacher Zhuang, I got accepted to National Chiao Tung University!"
His eyes sparkled with excitement as he spoke, and a broad smile spread across his face while he clenched his fists tightly as if cheering himself on.
Everyone was momentarily stunned before processing the news. Teacher Zhuang's eyes widened like saucers; the bookmark he had been holding slipped from his fingers and fell to the ground with a thud. His mouth gaped open as he stammered, "What? National Chiao Tung University? Don’t joke with me!"
Aunt Huang Ling was equally astonished; she raised her hand to cover her mouth, her eyes brimming with surprise and disbelief as she murmured, "This child has truly succeeded! Who would have thought..." Teacher Zhuang quickly adjusted his glasses again and scrutinized Lin Dongzhe closely, filled with pride and admiration as he nodded repeatedly. "Well done! Truly remarkable! It’s said that absence makes the heart grow fonder; how impressive!"
Lin Dongzhe must have worked incredibly hard to achieve such a turnaround!
Only Xiao Ting seemed less surprised after an initial moment of shock; her smile grew more pronounced, revealing her delight and quiet joy. She understood Lin Dongzhe's tenacity well; despite others often teasing him in the past for not performing well academically, she always believed in his limitless potential. Now that he had successfully gained admission to National Chiao Tung University through sheer effort, her heart swelled with pride for him. Clearing her throat playfully to break the stunned silence of the room, she teased with a grin, "Look at you all! You act like you've seen an alien! I knew Lin Dongzhe would make it! He’s just been hiding his talents all along; now he's finally shining!"
Lin Dongzhe felt his cheeks heat up from everyone’s reactions. He scratched his head again and nervously tugged at the hem of his shirt while reminiscing about those long nights spent studying during senior year. "Teacher Zhuang," he began earnestly, "you don’t know how terrible my grades were at first. I was always at the bottom of my class; I was almost in despair. But then I thought to myself that I couldn’t just drift through life like this—I had to make my parents proud and prove something to myself."
As he spoke, his gaze drifted into the distance as if recalling those days of hard work: getting up before dawn to memorize vocabulary words and formulas, studying late into the night until he could barely keep his eyes open—when fatigue set in, he would splash cold water on his face to keep going. When faced with difficult problems, instead of skipping them like before, he would tackle them head-on—searching for teachers everywhere for help.
Everyone listened intently as warmth filled the room; admiration radiated from their expressions as if basking in the glow of spring sunshine that illuminated every corner.
Just then, the conversation shifted unexpectedly to Lin Dongzhe's younger sister Lin Xiao Yu. Aunt Huang Ling slapped her thigh and turned her curious gaze toward Lin Dongzhe. "By the way, where’s your sister? Which university did she get into?"
Lin Dongzhe sat up straight in an instant, beaming with pride as he waved his hand excitedly in the air. "Auntie! My sister has loved dancing since she was little; when she dances, she moves like a graceful little deer! She practiced day and night without rest. Guess what? She got accepted into Shanghai Theatre Academy! She’s finally fulfilling her dream—she’ll definitely shine on stage!"
Aunt Huang Ling's eyes widened in surprise and joy as she nodded vigorously. "Wow! That girl is truly talented! All that cleverness from when she was young has really paid off!" Then she turned to Lin Dongzhe with a playful nudge of her elbow and raised an eyebrow. "So what are you studying at National Chiao Tung University? It wouldn’t be physical education now would it?"
Lin Dongzhe tilted his head in confusion and shook his hands frantically while leaning forward earnestly. "Auntie! Of course not! I’m studying chemistry! I love tinkering with all those bottles and jars—watching things change is so fascinating! I want to make a good career in this field; who knows? Maybe I’ll create something useful one day." His fists clenched tightly as hope filled his expression as if envisioning himself achieving great success in a laboratory.
Teacher Zhuang chimed in teasingly from the side: "Oh really? Chemistry sounds great! Are you going to become a big scientist and invent something amazing?"
Lin Dongzhe's face flushed bright red as he scratched his head sheepishly and chuckled nervously. "Who am I kidding? I just want to focus on learning first; if I can achieve even small accomplishments along the way, I’ll be satisfied." The room buzzed with lively chatter filled with blessings for both him and his sister—a warm atmosphere akin to a cozy hearth.
As they continued chatting amidst laughter and excitement, Lin Dongzhe's gaze would often drift towards Xiao Ting. Seeing her smile radiantly under the sunlight made him feel like feathers were brushing against him—tickling him pleasantly. Occasionally their eyes would meet; initially flustered, he would quickly look away but then find himself unable to resist glancing back again—his feelings intensifying each time their gazes locked as if countless unspoken words were hidden within those fleeting moments of connection.
