"Wen Bo, you've had too much to drink. Get some rest and we'll talk when you're sober. Let's both take a moment to cool down."
But Li Wenbo wanted to say something more, only to be interrupted by Fang Jing Shu.
"Let's leave it at that. I'm hanging up now."
The line went dead with a series of beeps. Li Wenbo dejectedly set down his phone, feeling an emptiness inside. He knew Fang Jing Shu was rejecting him, but the more she pushed him away, the more he found himself thinking about her. He took a deep swig from his glass, finishing off the remaining whiskey. The alcohol dulled his worries temporarily as he stumbled to the edge of his bed and collapsed into sleep.
When Li Wenbo woke up with a hangover, his head throbbed painfully. He vaguely remembered calling Fang Jing Shu the night before, but the specifics of their conversation were lost to him. Picking up his phone, he saw her name in the call log and felt a sinking sensation in his stomach; he must have said something he shouldn't have.
He hesitated about calling her back but ultimately decided against it. He knew that anything he said now would only make things worse. Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair and got up to take a cold shower, hoping it would help clear his mind.
Meanwhile, Fang Jing Shu was having breakfast with Lin Xiaoxuan. Her complexion was pale, and dark circles under her eyes indicated she hadn’t slept well.
"Fang Jing Shu, are you okay?" Lin Xiaoxuan asked with concern. "Did Li Wenbo call you last night? What did he say?"
Fang Jing Shu sighed and shook her head. "It was nothing, just some drunken ramblings."
"Drunken ramblings? What could he possibly say that would keep you up all night?" Lin Xiaoxuan pressed on. "Tell me the truth—did Li Wenbo reach out to Dai Xinyi again?"
Fang Jing Shu paused for a moment before shaking her head again. "Not this time; it was just from before."
Lin Xiaoxuan exploded with anger upon hearing this. "That Li Wenbo! How outrageous! He's already marrying you but still keeps in touch with his ex-fiancée! Does he even care about you?!"
Fang Jing Shu's eyes reddened as she fought back tears. "Xiaoxuan, please stop. It's my fault; I'm not good enough for him."
"Stop right there!" Lin Xiaoxuan interrupted fiercely. "Fang Jing Shu, don't ever think like that! You're amazing—talented and beautiful! It's that idiot Li Wenbo who doesn't know how to appreciate you! If he dares to contact Dai Xinyi again, I swear I'll break his legs!"
Fang Jing Shu managed a weak smile, but inside, it felt like needles were stabbing her heart. She knew Lin Xiaoxuan was trying to comfort her, but deep down, she understood that Li Wenbo would always have a place in his heart for Dai Xinyi; she was merely a substitute.
Due to the conflict between Li Wenbo and Fang Jing Shu, Lin Xiaoxuan's date with Chen Jianguo also fell through. Originally, their relationship had been strengthened by the wedding preparations for Fang Jing Shu and Li Wenbo; they were so close to breaking through that final barrier, but now everything was abruptly halted because of Li Wenbo's reckless actions.
The more Lin Xiaoxuan thought about it, the angrier she became, so she decided to call Chen Jianguo out.
"Jian Guo, don't you think Li Wenbo is a jerk? He's marrying Fang Jing Shu but still sneaks off to see his ex-fiancée! Where does he think that leaves Fang Jing Shu?!" Lin Xiaoxuan launched into a tirade as soon as they met, not giving Chen Jianguo a chance to speak.
Chen Jianguo could only smile helplessly as he handed her a cup of coffee. "Xiaoxuan, calm down and have some coffee first."
Lin Xiaoxuan took the coffee and gulped down half of it before finally calming down a bit. "I just can't believe someone as wonderful as Fang Jing Shu ended up with such a scumbag like Li Wenbo! It drives me crazy!"
