My husband traveled all over Europe with his childhood sweetheart. While I was suffering from intestinal cramps and unbearable pain, he was overlooking the panoramic view of Paris with her in front of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. When I had a car accident and miscarried, he was soaking in the volcanic hot springs in Greece with her. On that day, it was his childhood sweetheart who hired someone to kill. The one regretting it now is him.
Ji Chuan kissed me fiercely, his lips carrying a faint scent of smoke. The scorching kiss made my cheeks flush, and I instinctively protected my belly, trying to shy away. He noticed my retreat and loosened his grip on my arms, his voice low and husky as he said, "What are you hiding from? I'll be careful."
My lips instinctively pressed together as thoughts swirled in my mind. "I don't want to..." Before I could finish my sentence, the sudden ringing of a phone interrupted his attention. In the past, he would have hung up immediately during moments like this.
His hand holding the phone paused, hovering above the anniversary gift I had prepared for him. The caller ID boldly displayed two words—Yao Yao. Feng Yao is Ji Chuan's neighbor. He released his hold on me, saying, "I’ll take this call."
The door slammed shut with a 'bang'. I stood there in a daze for a while. It was common for him to receive calls while we were together, and he would always answer them right in front of me. But Feng Yao was an exception.
After a long time, the door was gently pushed open again. He entered with a strong scent of smoke, wanting to continue kissing me. But thinking of the earlier phone call, I instinctively turned my head away, and his kiss landed on my cheek instead.
He frowned slightly and said to me, "You're acting a bit strange tonight."
"Have you encountered something troubling? You've smoked quite a lot this evening," I gently inquired.
He paused, realizing he had unconsciously smoked more than usual.
"I only remember smoking one," he murmured softly.
I furrowed my brow and asked, "Ji Chuan, are you hiding something from me?"
The phone rang again, and he stood up to answer it.
After just a couple of sentences from the other end, Ji Chuan's expression changed, and he hurriedly turned to leave.
Before stepping out, he touched my belly and said, "You should sleep first; I have something urgent to attend to."
Ji Chuan ran a securities exchange, and it had become routine for him to suddenly leave after coming home at night for business matters. I was already accustomed to his unexpected departures.
I gently stroked my belly, lost in thought.
What could it be at this late hour?
Later, I found out that night Feng Yao had nearly gotten into serious trouble.
That evening, after being drugged while drinking, Feng Yao was almost assaulted, and it was Ji Chuan who saved her.
After Ji Chuan left, I called Mother Ji to check in.
When she answered, she asked, "Qin Qin, did A Chuan and Feng Yao go to a high school reunion today?"
Feng Yao? She’s back?
For a moment, I was taken aback.
Could Ji Chuan's unusual behavior be related to Feng Yao?
After a brief silence, I replied, "I haven't heard Ji Chuan mention it; he said he had business to handle at the exchange."
Upon hearing my response, Mother Ji explained from the other end of the line, "I heard Uncle Li say that Feng Yao just returned to the country. I thought Ji Chuan went with her to the reunion; don't overthink it."
"Mom, I understand that Ji Chuan is busy with work," I replied.
"That's good to hear. What were you about to say?"
"I just wanted to ask how you and Dad have been feeling lately," I managed to express my concern, trying hard not to let Mother Ji notice my unease.
"We're doing fine, as long as you and Ji Chuan are well."
After hanging up the phone, I fell into deep thought.
Ji Chuan and I started dating back in college.
