"I got promoted, so I'm treating you to dinner!"
I handed my phone to Mao Jian, letting him choose whatever he wanted.
I was feeling quite excited, and my voice unconsciously rose.
Mao Jian looked at me with a cold gaze.
I didn't pay much attention and shoved the phone into his hands. "Go ahead and order."
Mao Jian scrolled through the screen, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "You're a Rich Woman now."
I paused for a moment, not quite grasping what he meant.
Mao Jian then asked, "Why did the boss choose you and not me?"
I frowned. "Mao Jian, what do you mean?"
He stared at me, his eyes filled with resentment.
"Yu Mingli, this time the loser is you. Are you really better than me? Where am I lacking?"
I couldn't understand why he would say such things.
Clearly, the boss announced my promotion as team leader in front of everyone.
Clearly, I had performed better in this competition.
I tried to reason with him: "Mao Jian, isn't it only natural for me to be promoted to team leader?"
Mao Jian looked at me in disbelief. "Are you too close with the boss?"
Seeing his suddenly enlightened expression, I realized what he was implying.
He thought I had an inappropriate relationship with the boss!
I was furious in that moment.
I picked up my cup and splashed water at him.
The water splattered all over his face.
He froze for a few seconds before coming back to his senses.
Mao Jian looked at me, his eyes filled with guilt. "Mingli, I'm sorry!"
His eyes were red, and he sincerely apologized, "Mingli, I've been feeling terrible these past few days."
"We joined the company together, and now you’ve become my boss. I—"
"Mao Jian, it’s not like that," I gently interrupted him. "We’re competing fairly."
That day, Mao Jian deeply reflected on his actions.
We both calmed down.
I thought about how difficult it was for us to be together.
Mao Jian was indeed a good person.
When we had just graduated, our monthly salary was only a little over three thousand.
To save money, we often ate steamed buns with pickled vegetables.
One night, he couldn't stand the hunger anymore.
He went downstairs and bought some grilled sausages.
Four sausages cost a total of sixteen yuan.
He gave me everything.
He said that girls get hungry easily.
He promised to work hard in the future to provide me with a good life.
Thinking back on everything, my heart softened.
I forgave him.
We set three rules:
First, work and personal relationships must remain separate; the hierarchy at work should not affect our personal feelings.
Second, when we are at home, he is my subordinate, my little brother.
Third, no similar thoughts are allowed again.
I believe that as long as we communicate and adjust to each other, we can make it work.
Mao Jian's proposal was not approved.
When I got home that night, he gave me the cold shoulder.
“Mao Jian, what are we having for dinner?”
He looked at me, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes. “The boss didn’t give any orders, so I only ordered takeout for myself.”
I had been hungry all day, and my stomach was starting to ache.
But the takeout would take a while to arrive.
I could only endure it.
I took Mao Jian's hand and said softly, "Mao Jian, Guo Hua's design is really better than what you did."
"She graduated from a prestigious university and has the skills," he replied.
Mao Jian's expression darkened. "She's the leader's sister-in-law and has received personal guidance from him, so of course she's impressive."
I didn't understand. "Mao Jian, why would you say that?"
Mao Jian didn't respond.
He got up and went to the study, slamming the door shut with a heavy sound.
My heart felt heavy too.
The cold war between Mao Jian and me lasted for several days.
Until the new intern, Ping Ping, fainted due to her menstrual period.
I instructed Mao Jian, "You drive us to the hospital."
Mao Jian looked at me. "Mingli, let me take Ping Ping to the hospital."
I became anxious. "She needs to be taken to the hospital promptly!"
