The speed of the Shadow was astonishing, leaving behind a series of afterimages like a ghostly apparition.
Lin Yuan barely had time to react before the Shadow's attack arrived. "Wow, this speed is almost like a rocket!" Lin Yuan thought to himself, hastily dodging and narrowly avoiding the gust of wind from the Shadow's palm. This was no human; it was like an NPC with cheat codes!
The Shadow's attacks came like a torrential storm, each strike infused with a fierce killing intent that left Lin Yuan gasping for breath. He struggled to defend himself, feeling utterly powerless, like a little chick being pecked at by an eagle. "This guy is stronger than I imagined!" Lin Yuan lamented internally, yet he dared not show any signs of weakness.
With a sharp clang, Lin Yuan's dagger was knocked from his hand by the Shadow's strike, flying through the air in a graceful arc before clattering to the ground and rolling to a stop beside a pile of discarded laboratory equipment. Lin Yuan glanced at his dagger with dismay; he had spent a fortune on it, capable of cutting through iron and severing hair with ease. Now it lay there like useless scrap metal—what a loss!
Seeing this, Su Jiu'er gritted her teeth against the pain and swung her broken compass, attempting to disrupt the Shadow's attacks. "Stay back! You're in no condition to fight!" Lin Yuan shouted anxiously. This girl was reckless; even in her injured state, she was trying to help!
Ignoring Lin Yuan's warning, Su Jiu'er knew that if she didn’t assist him, he might not last much longer. She clenched her jaw and poured all the remaining Lingqi in her body into the broken compass. The compass emitted a faint glow as its needle spun wildly, creating a strange energy wave that interfered with the Shadow's movements.
The Shadow hesitated slightly, clearly affected by the compass. He frowned, irritation flashing in his eyes. "Trivial tricks!" he scoffed, increasing the intensity of his attacks.
Seizing the opportunity, Lin Yuan picked up his dagger from the ground and rejoined the fight. The two worked together seamlessly—one on offense and one on defense—struggling to withstand the Shadow's relentless assault.
"This kid is surprisingly slippery!" the Shadow thought to himself, taken aback by how well Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er coordinated their efforts to hold out against him for so long.
"Damn it, this won't do!" Lin Yuan felt anxious; he needed to find a way out of this predicament. An idea sparked in his mind.
He deliberately feigned exhaustion, staggering backward to lure the Shadow closer. The Shadow took the bait, believing Lin Yuan was at his limit. A smug look crossed his face as he struck out toward Lin Yuan’s chest.
At that moment, Lin Yuan suddenly activated a device beneath his feet. It was something he had stumbled upon earlier; it looked like a Pressure Sensor connected to various equipment in the lab. He had suspected there was something off about it and had secretly adjusted it to a critical threshold, waiting for just such an opportunity to put it to use.
With a loud bang, the equipment in the laboratory exploded, flames shooting into the sky. The shockwave from the explosion knocked Shadow back several steps, leaving the laboratory in ruins, thick smoke billowing and obscuring visibility.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Lin Yuan grabbed Su Jiu'er and fled toward the exit. "Cough, cough, cough..." Su Jiu'er coughed violently, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.
"Hang in there! We're almost out!" Lin Yuan encouraged her, but inwardly he was lamenting. This girl was seriously injured; if they didn't get out soon, she might not make it.
The two of them pushed themselves to their limits, weaving through the maze-like Secret Base while Shadow relentlessly pursued them like a relentless parasite. "Trying to escape? Not so easy!" Shadow roared, his speed increasing as he closed in on Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er.
"Damn it, this old guy is like a stubborn adhesive! No matter how hard I try to shake him off!" Lin Yuan cursed inwardly, his feet not daring to slow down for even a moment.
Finally, they burst out of the Secret Base and onto the street outside. Shadow followed closely behind, exuding a murderous aura. "You can't escape!" he said coldly, his eyes glinting with malice.
Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er exchanged a glance filled with determination. They knew that survival was unlikely today. "Looks like we might meet our end here," Lin Yuan sighed helplessly, yet a surge of unwillingness welled up inside him.
Just then, a car suddenly sped toward them, screeching to a halt right in front of them with tires screeching against the pavement. The door swung open, and Zhou Haoran jumped out of the vehicle. "Lin Yuan! Su Jiu'er! Get in!" Zhou Haoran shouted urgently, his face etched with concern.
Without hesitation, Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er jumped into the car. Zhou Haoran slammed on the gas, and the car sped away into the night.
Shadow stood there with a dark expression. He hadn't expected anyone to come to rescue Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er. "Damn it!" he gritted his teeth. "I will find you!"
After narrowly escaping, Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er were both severely injured and their Lingqi nearly depleted. During their flight, Lin Yuan inadvertently noticed that Shadow's sleeve was stained with a special type of Lingqi that resembled an energy substance he had previously discovered at the Qi Gong Association headquarters.
This discovery made Lin Yuan realize that the Qi Gong Association might be hiding an even greater secret. What could this secret be? And what was Shadow's true identity? All of this remained a mystery—one that seemed to be waiting for Lin Yuan to unravel. But for now, what he and Su Jiu'er needed to do was heal their wounds before continuing their investigation.
