The passage was filled with dust and the stench of blood, making Lin Yuan cough uncontrollably.
He wiped the grime from his face, feeling as if he had just crawled out of a coal mine, looking disheveled and dirty.
"Cough, cough, cough... These guys really know how to hit hard," Lin Yuan muttered while rubbing his aching shoulder. "Good thing I run fast and light as a swallow; otherwise, I would have ended up as a pile of mush today."
He shook off the dust from his clothes like a drenched dog trying to regain some semblance of dignity.
Su Jiu'er leaned against the wall, her face pale and her brows furrowed. Her slender fingers anxiously rubbed the compass in her hand, as if trying to discern some clue from it.
The compass needle spun wildly, like a drunken dancer swaying without rhythm, buzzing ominously and sending chills down one’s spine.
"The lead is broken," Su Jiu'er said wearily, a hint of undeniable disappointment in her voice.
"Completely broken," she repeated, her tone heavier this time, as if pronouncing a death sentence.
Lin Yuan sighed and walked over to Su Jiu'er, glancing at the compass. The needle continued to spin chaotically like a headless fly, making him feel dizzy.
"Ugh, what bad luck," Lin Yuan scratched his head helplessly, feeling as if his dandruff was falling off. "After finally finding some leads and being so close to the treasure's door, we get sent back to square one. It's like pouring water into a bamboo basket—completely futile."
He activated his Gazing Ability, scanning the area like a radar in search of residual Spiritual Energy Fluctuation. However, apart from the chaotic energy left by the fight, there was nothing—clean as if freshly mopped.
"These guys really cleaned up their tracks well," Lin Yuan squinted his eyes like a tiger catching the scent of prey. "It seems they came prepared; they clearly don’t want us finding the ruins."
"What should we do next?" Su Jiu'er looked up at Lin Yuan, her voice tinged with anxiety, like a lost child yearning for guidance.
Lin Yuan stroked his chin thoughtfully, his brow furrowed like a small hill.
"How about we try again?" Lin Yuan said reluctantly, a hint of stubbornness in his tone. "Maybe we can find other clues. What if a miracle happens?"
"It's useless," Su Jiu'er shook her head, her voice firm. "The enemy is already on alert. Continuing to investigate will only alarm them further, making it even harder to find them later."
"Then what do you suggest we do?" Lin Yuan asked, feeling restless like an ant on a hot pan. "We can't just give up, can we? The Ancient Ruins might hold the secret to immortality. It would be such a shame to miss out!"
"Of course we can't give up," Su Jiu'er took a deep breath, her tone becoming resolute, like a general strategizing for battle. "But we need to change our approach; we can't just flail around like headless chickens anymore."
"Oh? What do you have in mind?" Lin Yuan's interest was piqued, his eyes lighting up as if he had discovered a new world.
Su Jiu'er pulled out a map from her backpack and carefully unfolded it, presenting it like a precious treasure.
The map was densely marked with various symbols, leaving Lin Yuan feeling dizzy.
"This is the distribution map of the Qi Gong Association," Su Jiu'er pointed to several marks on the map. "I suspect this ambush is related to them. They might have deliberately set a trap to eliminate us all at once."
"The Qi Gong Association?" Lin Yuan frowned, as if he had heard something unbelievable. "Why would they ambush us? We have no grievances with them; could there be some misunderstanding?"
"The news about the Ancient Ruins may have leaked," Su Jiu'er said gravely, her tone heavy like dark clouds looming over a city. "The Qi Gong Association has their eyes on this site too; they want to monopolize the treasure and eliminate us as competitors."
"Those guys are really persistent," Lin Yuan's expression darkened, resembling the ominous clouds before a storm. "It seems we need to deal with them first; otherwise, they'll buzz around us like annoying flies."
"I think the same," Su Jiu'er nodded decisively. "Let's return to the city and gather more intelligence about the Qi Gong Association. Knowing ourselves and our enemy will ensure victory in every battle."
Lin Yuan stared at the map and suddenly recalled an enemy mark he had seen during the fight—a peculiar symbol resembling an eagle soaring in the sky.
"Wait," Lin Yuan said, pointing to a region on the map with urgency in his voice. "I feel like I've seen this symbol before; it seems familiar."
Su Jiu'er leaned in for a closer look, her expression changing slightly as if she had seen something terrifying.
"This is... the mark of the Black Hawk Society," Su Jiu'er said, a hint of surprise in her tone. "How could they be involved? These guys are a notorious underground organization, known for their brutality and mystery. Are they interested in the Ancient Ruins too?"
"It seems things are more complicated than we imagined," Lin Yuan's eyes sparkled with insight, like a detective uncovering a crucial clue. "This ambush might be part of a larger conspiracy, hiding greater forces behind it."
"Then we need to be even more careful," Su Jiu'er said seriously. "The Black Hawk Society teaming up with the Qi Gong Association won't be easy to deal with. It's a formidable alliance, and we must prepare thoroughly."
"Let them come; we'll face them head-on," Lin Yuan clenched his fists, his tone resolute. "I'm not afraid of them! I, Lin Yuan, won’t back down. Even if they join forces, I will fight them to the end!"
"Let's head back to the city," Su Jiu'er said as she folded the map decisively. "We need to prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead. The most important thing now is to conserve our strength and wait for the right moment."
The two left the abandoned factory, disappearing into the night like two ghosts, silent and unseen.
Meanwhile, on a distant mountaintop, a shadow quietly observed their departing figures, a cold smile creeping across its lips like a successful predator revealing its sharp fangs.
"Lin Yuan, Su Jiu'er," the shadow whispered, its voice hoarse and eerie. "The game has only just begun..."
In its hand was a black token engraved with an eagle design, glinting ominously under the moonlight.
